VESTIBULAR_1

Albert Barqué-Duran & Marc Marzenit

VESTIBULAR_1 is an immersive audio-visual installation, premièred at Ars Electronica 2020 (Barcelona) that induces to the audience illusory sensations of self-motion in complete darkness by temporarily disrupting their vestibular functioning. This is achieved via specific powerful patterns and configurations of light and sound stimuli that persist in the retina and in the auditory system while in darkness. Any organism moving through its environment receives a constant stream of sensory signals about self-motion: optic flow inputs from vision, proprioceptive information about the position of the body from muscles, joints and tendons, and inputs for acceleration via the vestibular system. This latter seems particularly important for self- motion (Green & Angelaki, 2010). Under normal circumstances, the brain optimally combines sensory signals for self-motion, which are successfully integrated to produce a coherent representation of the organism in the external environment. However, conflicts between sensory modalities may occur when sensory signals carry discrepant information. If the vestibular system is altered with conflicting sensory information, we easily realise that the usual way in which we perceive objects of human expression, such as visual forms, music, and art, does dramatically change (Gallagher, M., Dowsett, R., & Ferrè, E.R., 2019). The installation VESTIBULAR_1, Premièred at Ars Electronica 2020 (Barcelona), is a co-production of BEEP Collection – NewArtFoundation using technology from Protopixel. The piece is based on the innovative research from the VeME (Vestibular Multisensory Embodiment) Lab at Royal Holloway, University of London, which investigates the role played by vestibular signals in the perception and representation of the body and the external world and how it affects aesthetic preferences. 0xDEAFBEEF: Audiovisual produced with text editor and C compiler.

0xDEAFBEEF

--Enter Cube-- DEAFBEEF is the audiovisual project of artist/engineer Tyler de Witt. Fed up with the "moving target" of media production technology, I adopt an ascetic approach to digital art. Using only a cheap laptop, a text editor and a C compiler, I write programs to scrawl numbers directly into the digital recording medium, later to be interpreted as sound and images. The 16min video is a montage of audiovisual pieces created in this fashion. More information about my process can be found here: https://www.deafbeef.com/about.htm

Tony Cruise

--Enter Cube-- Meet the subversive expatriate who scores your favorite celebrities' Instagram while challenging the cult of the perfect body.
As the aroma of a few dozen decomposing roses reach the viewer (one at a time, by appointment-only), projections of rolling clouds bring light to the pedantic sound sculpture and painstakingly hand-stained garments comprising Dark Spring, a private exhibition held at Factory Berlin this winter.
Presented in a three-dimensional mixed reality room enclosed by a repurposed underground railway door - the conceptual installation; equal measures fetish and fantasy, uses sex dolls to interrogate beauty standards while ascribing sound to invasive surveillance mechanisms native to the fashion industry. Meet Tony Cruise, the subversive expatriate and Factory Berlin/Sonar +D/Beats by Dr. Dre 2021 Artist in Residence who scores your favorite celebrities' Instagram while challenging the cult of the perfect body.
About: Tony Cruise is a sound artist who cultivates ideas for musicians, institutions, and brands – including scoring film, sound and instrument design and consulting as well as the development of special projects such as software, books, installations and limited-run merchandising.

Synthesised shared dream #1

Sam Potter

--Enter Cube-- 'Synthesised shared dream #1' is the first commercial piece from Potter’s company ‘Dream Suite'. It is the generated output from an algorithm trained on two lovers’ dream diaries. Separated since 2020 because of the pandemic, the video was made to help them feel like they’re in the same dream together - the scenes coming entirely from the AI their dream diaries trained. The ensuing video is a transposition of the ‘shared dream’, taking stylistic clues from the couple. Within the dreamworld, revelling in its erotic and eerie resonances the two can feel a little closer. The music is enhanced with recordings of their heartbeats and a ‘data sonification’ of the ‘love hormone’ oxytocin. Since starting dream suite last year, Sam has been working alongside everyone from award winning producer Dan Carey to spatial sound studios monom and Lobe. His experiments have included making a ‘dream bridge’ connecting people in Berlin and Vancouver and smaller projects for individuals wanting waking life access to their dreams. In June he will be showcasing a communal dreaming experience he conducted with BBC Radio 3 - made entirely by and for the listeners’ subconscious minds. From May 18th-22nd at Kottbusser Tor he will be showcasing the ‘Infinite Dream Scroll’ with We Dream and JJ Weihl - a chance to connect to the dreams of our sleeping city. For more information including up to date pricing and bespoke NFT's please contact info@dreamsuite.dev. Thank you to the owners of this piece for agreeing to exhibit it in partnership with SOUND OBSESSED. Video: David Wilson and Sam Potter Music: Suzy Sleepzzz & Cynthia Data Sonifications: Sam Potter

allapop

A survival play in VR by Alla Popp. (Recorded at Hot Mess / dgtl fmnsm x Spy on Me 2 / HAU Berlin) In times when crisis plays its part at every level of our consciousness, stress management becomes an attitude we internalise and apply in daily life. Acting under pressure simplifies choices and helps prioritising what really matters. Such thinking patterns enable coping with urgent everyday realities bombarded with bad news, pessimistic outlooks and general skeptical mindset towards the future scenarios other than techno-dystopian ones. One of the answers to this hysteria, is an easy one to come across online - forewarned is forearmed. From social injustice and mistrust towards governments, to mainstream media narratives and unsettling conspiracy theories - preparing for surviving has many triggers. Conservative and masculine, “prepping” became a reaction, a subculture and a booming market that has an advice and a product to withstand any potential threat. These instruments vary from city parkours to wild animals butchering, utilised as part of strategies for survival of a small unit of people. Hazardous fear of threat is quick on triggering instincts. The question that is much more important though, is how to maintain humanity in such situations? And what kind of new inner modes and toolboxes do we need to ensure that our actions carry potential for a decent life for all? A performance by Alla Popp “Under the Sun 2120” takes place in a Social Prepper simulator - a VR Game played and performed in physical and virtual spaces. It raises questions and develops strategies in an interlude between fear and hope. OIR

Moisés Horta Valenzuela (Hexorcismos)

--Enter Cube-- # Notes on OIR OÍR stems from my ongoing research on AI, sound synthesis and electronic music. Since starting my adventure into Deep Learning systems for music a couple of years ago,I've asked myself if Deep Learning (AI) is a tool or a medium? Right now I've come to the conclusion that it can be both, and this is what exactly I'm trying to explore with this project. When we talk about Deep Learning as medium, there are particular three processes which one engages with when working with these generative systems: curation of the data, training and monitoring of the algorithm as it 'learns' and generating new synthetic media. Rinse and repeat. There are a couple of aspects which interest me from this process, namely that each time you train the AI algorithm, it's weights and biases, or what it has 'learned', changes over time depending on the data you are having it learn from; the algorithm generates patterns present in these vast amounts of images and music, as is the case of OÍR. So this quality of a constantly changing and morphing generative algorithm is exactly what I want to explore with OÍR, and what better way to do it than though electronic dance music and techno culture. I chose a channel as the canvas for the first episode, or EPOCH, of OÍR with a selection from the archive from HOER Berlin because I feel this channel has done the amazing job of generating a collective culture, specifically within techno and electronicmusic , and I wanted to explore which patterns are emerging from this culture. In other words, which patterns can be synthesized, both visually and sonically from all these sets and different approximations to techno, (over 1,400+!)? My desire with this art project is not to automatize or replace DJ's or electronic musicians in any way, but rather have OÍR be a sort of 'live generative archive' of certain cultural moments in electronic music which are increasingly existing on big tech platforms and the internet. By the way, OÍR means "to listen" in spanish. About: Moisés Horta Valenzuela (1988, he/him) is an autodidact sound artist, technologist and electronic musician from Tijuana, México, working in the fields of computer music, Artificial Intelligence and the history and politics of emerging digital technologies. As 𝔥𝔢𝔵𝔬𝔯𝔠𝔦𝔰𝔪𝔬𝔰, he crafts an uncanny link between ancient and state-of-the-art sound technologies channeled through a critical decolonial theory lens in the context of contemporary electronic music and the sonic arts. His work has been presented in Ars Electronica, MUTEK México, Transart Festival, MUTEK: AI Art Lab Montréal, Elektron Musik Studion, CTM Festival: Music Makers Hacklab, among others. He is currently an artist in residence at Factory Berlin where he works on new compositions and sound art installations using machine learning while pursuing a Masters degree in Sound Studies and Sonic arts at the University of Arts Berlin.
