How To Build & Launch A Show

The New Art City toolkit is flexible to a variety of approaches, but this is our recommended way of building and launching a show.

Pre-Production

Concept

Before you start, it's helpful to have a concept in mind, and one or more artists lined up. Take a look at our Virtual Curation Strategies guide for ideas, and browse the shows on our homepage to get some inspiration.

Communicating Expectations with Artists

Virtual-first curation is a new experience for many artists. As a curator you are responsible for showing artists what is possible, as well as communicating how online galleries have certain limitations in terms of file size and fidelity. You can send out the link to our Artists Onboarding Guide to get them started.

Collecting Artworks

You will need to collect digital files from artists and have them ready to upload. Take a look at our File Format Guidelines to get a complete list of the types of files New Art City can handle.

Buildout

Adding Collaborators

You can install in real time with collaborators in your space. Visit the "Add Collaborators" page in the sidebar to invite users and select which spaces they are allowed to edit.

Uploads & Metadata

Using the upload artwork tool, you will add artworks to one or more spaces in your project. Each artwork has several fields for metadata, which will be visible to people who enter your gallery. If an artwork does not have a title, none of the other metadata will appear. This is useful if you have objects like walls or architecture, which don't need visible metadata.

Positioning Artworks

When you click the "Preview Space" button, the 3D editor will open. In this view you can click on artworks to move, rotate and scale them. You can right click to change which tool you're using. Refer to the control legend on the top left of the 3D editor.

Where can I find 3d objects for my world?

There are many different places online to find free and low-cost 3D objects in glb, fbx and obj format. Some of our favorites include:

You can also create your own 3D models in Blender, a free 3D computer graphics tool. See our guide, Blender for New Art City.

Finalization & Launch

Space Metadata

Make sure you enter all the information in the fields when you click "Space Details" for each space.

Space OG Image

Make sure that an OG image is selected under Space Details, from any image you've uploaded to the space. This is the image that appears when your space is shared on social media, on the loading screen for your space, and on the New Art City homepage if it is added there. The best OG images have fewer than 7 words and are mostly visual.

Space URL

Make sure you have updated the space's public URL to whatever you want it to be. The public URL appears below the space title, and can be edited by clicking the pencil icon next to it.

Publish Often

Whenever you want to push your updates to the public URL, you'll have to press the publish button.

Launch Date

On the world settings page you should set a launch date for your show. If your launch date is in the future your public page will automatically show a coming soon page.

Send for Promotion

Let the New Art City team know about your world by using the form inside the "Promote" button on the world settings page.

Share and Enjoy

Send out your public URL before or after the launch date and time, and have a public opening when visitors are encouraged to join. Organizing a live stream performance is a good way to make the event special.
