Statement:
Summer of 2022. Luca starts using AI technology for the first time. AI-image generators such as Midjourney, Dreamlike, and Stable Diffusion, among others, are gaining wider attention and are being both used and criticized by artists worldwide.
Luca starts generating images using these tools but encounters an obstacle: Current AIs aren't trained to understand Spanish, his primary language. Forced to use English, he finds himself frustrated by the images he gets due to his less-than-perfect prompts.
Still optimistic about a future in which AI technologies become more ethical and inclusive, he starts archiving the images he’s generating without curation to build a "Cuir Museum of AI -Mis-Representation". His common prompts include English words such as immigrant, queer, and Latinx, mixed with Spanish idioms such as cuir, marica, and sudaca, among others.
3D Environment Description:
As you enter the space, you’ll find the Cuir AI title, made with letter balloons that have a metallic reflective texture. The environment displays a pink fog. Near the letter balloons, there's a large 3D model of a neural network composed of many white spheres connected by thin dark tendrils. Some spheres are semi-transparent, with black lines exposing the polygons of the mesh beneath. A sign made with 3D letters, solid, also with a metallic reflection says: “press 0 for a free fall, or fly around.”
By pressing 0 on your keyboard, you’ll fall straight through the central spiral column of a low-poly skyscraper textured with hundreds of square AI-generated images, mostly portraits of individuals and pairs of queer trans Latinx people. When you reach the ground floor, you see larger images installed around a large ground floor area.
Out of the skyscraper, there are green, red, and blue balloons and smartphones floating in space, all of which have a metallic reflective texture. At the bottom, there's a floor plane also textured with a grid of AI-generated images, as the skyscraper.
Moving around the skyscraper, you’ll find some of the AI-generated images animated, with a crossfading effect.
