Statement:
Always Fresh, a pizza joint on the LES, couldn’t serve up slices when local patrons fled the city. It’s a shell now—so are so many other storefronts around Manhattan, and the hollow condos that were only ever home to money. The inhabitants of empty high-rises got raptured to Connecticut, or smuggled the secrets of terraforming on a private shuttle to Mars.
We’re still here, doubled down amid all this emptiness, huddled with the parallelograms of our screens, our faces framed and beamed back to us, the inverted telescope of navel-gazing. The world has gotten so small, but at least it’s portable, so long as the network holds up. Even so, if our tickets arrive we’ll be packed and ready to go to a new world beyond the horizon.
But what if we get stranded? Then our only hope will be to dissolve into the screen, flee into the placeless bigness of the metaverse on the other side, riding the strands of the web, where information is Always Fresh.
