It begins with and ends with , and infinite possibilities await therein. Rich, complex, and beautiful things can burst forth from between the deceptive simplicity of two opening and closing HTML tags. Upon a white browser page, each paragraph and image and canvas, perhaps the odd form or table, fills in color and shape and texture, until a unique composition emerges that tells a story and lights something up in us, the way all good art does.
Throughout the past semester, the artists/coders of USC Media Arts + Practice’s IML 300 have dedicated countless hours learning how to write in the languages of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript—first in blank-stared frustration, then with gradually fewer thoughts of computer-cide, and, towards the end, if they were so blessed by Brackets, sometimes even with joy, and—oh, after all that: these are just new tools and this is still just art. The results of their labor are these web-based artworks, keenly resonant as shining examples of how we can offer care, make tongue-in-cheek play, provide healing, inspire action, and facilitate agency. Here, they lay out their works, inviting visitors to engage with their explorations of interactivity, non-linear hypertexts, networked justice, and ask: what do you like to plant within and ?

For this exercise, I knew I wanted to use a song from Frank Ocean who is one of my favorite artists. I chose the song "Lost" because: 1.it's trending on tik tok right now; 2. It's a very visual song. I used a warm color palette with an emphasis on orange because it's the color used by Frank Ocean's album cover "Channel Orange." I was very happy that I was able to use the pattern that I created for our previous exercise in an interesting way for this project. I also realize that there is definitely a way to make my code simpler/smaller, so I'm looking to improve the efficiency of my code in future projects.
My pattern was inspired by Mexican Folklorico dance dresses and Mexican patterns in general. I also was inspired by the Mexican modernism movement of the 1920s that followed the Mexican revolution, specifically artist Carlos Mérida and his piece "Festival of the Birds" In this iteration of my pattern I translated 'Right to Identity' in Náhuatl, the native language of the Aztecs a language that was spoken commonly before Spanish colonization. It is this right to identity that was stressed during the Spanish modernism movement!
Web Cam filter that continuously blurs ones own image. Created to mirror post-concussion symptoms.
I wanted to make something that felt relaxing and aesthetic. I made this particle system which syncs to the song "25/8" by Cautious Clay. In his song, he talks about yellow, pink, purple, no grey, so those were the colors I included as the particles.

An interactive p5.js sketch that plays like multiple stages of a game. Sometimes I want to just to be told what to do without having to think. No stressful thoughts of the future and no expectations to be anything else. This project is a visualization of what its like to lose your head and be lost, disconnected from the world. Just do what you're told and see the consequences of your actions.
It watches from afar. What does it want? What does it see? Click on the link below to let it watch you.
Watch the pieces fly with utter enthusiasm as it loses all meaning.
a portal to the world in which we live and collaborate with ghosts and neon nanotech
An interactive exhibit of the cruel practice that is child marriage in Asia, specifically India.
For this exercise, I wanted to create an abstract pattern that fit in within the technology / cyberspace aesthetic. I decided to keep the color palette monochromatic as I thought that it made everything look uniform within the aesthetic I was going for. I was loosely inspired by barcodes and the patterns created by circuits on motherboards, which is why I have lines coming off of the ellipses.
For this project, I wanted to make something that resembled the matrix pattern. I used a series of arcs as I wanted the characters to look simialr to a cryptic alien language. I used random to randomize the arc sizes in order to make it feel like the arcs are moving. The users can also press the mouse in order to save the canvas and get a better look at what is happening.
This website is a project about Asian misrepresentation within film. As more and more films are being made and diversity is becoming more integrated within these films, it is important that we acknowledge and recognise what proper representation looks like. Over the years, Asian characters have been limited to stereotypes and comic relief, rather than being fully fledged characters. While representation has been slowly getting better over the years, it is still not at the level that it needs to be. This website will showcase both bad and good examples of Asian representation within film in hopes that filmmakers can recognize how Asians should be represented in this form of media. Through this, the hope is that filmmakers can see past mistakes in representation, and apply this knowledge to their films to make sure that this misrepresentation can no longer be an issue.
For this second exercise, I was inspired by the pattern that I created in the previous exercise. When I increased the gap between the rows, the cursor shapes end up looking like a very sharp fence. So, I created a small red circle that's desperately trying to escape from this maze while avoiding the sharp edges of the fence. Unfortunately, the red circle is never able to escape...
Eating disorders are serious but treatable mental and physical illnesses that can affect people of all genders, ages, races, religions, ethnicities, sexual orientations, body shapes, and weights. National surveys estimate that 20 million women and 10 million men in America will have an eating disorder at some point in their lives. While no one knows for sure what causes eating disorders, a growing consensus suggests that it is a range of biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors. This project is meant to spread awareness about eating disorders, which have the highest mortality rate of any mental illness.
A music video dedicated to Mazzy Star's song "Fade Into You", focusing on the breathing feeling the song provokes. This video is designed to create peace and depth as a viewer watches. Tell me, does it?
A website dedicated to the basic kindness and compassion we as humans deserve to receive and also to bestow upon others.A place where we are allowed to express our needs and desires without fear of appearing selfish or emotional. A place where humanity takes first importance and the world calms for just a few moments.
An ARG puzzle game. Investigate a mysterious disappearance that you know is linked to one website: Genie. Go through the website and explore its secrets.
A music video for FINNEAS' "I Don't Miss You At All." This song always puts me in a good mood and I love his lyrics.
And I'm sleeping fine I don't mean to boast But I only dream about you Once or twice a night at most And it feels so good Eating alone I don't get distracted by your smile And miss the green lights driving home No sign of stopping The house isn't far But I think our song is coming on And now I wanna crash the car
Pro tip for intruders: wear pink to appear vulnerable, approachable, and likable!
Unpack your doubts if you don't feel safe in the place you call home.
Scream from the top of your lungs if you don't want to starve.
This animated patch came from two seperate experiments, with both being inspired by the same artist. First experiment was to have the "line" shape actively spiral and reach the edges of the canvas in a uniform way, and the other experiment was playing with pairing the "sphere" and "box" shapes and allowing them to coexist in an animated and chaotic space, playing with the size of the shapes to find interesting 3D layers that arrive from these different instances. The inspiration of Ryoji Ikeda is plentiful I believe in this patch -- one inspiration being the direct reference to a natural galactic phenomena (the sun, a star in our universe), the other inspiration being the use of protruding and dynamic lines. I wanted there to be a sense of energy, and drama, I hope I achieve that!
In this website, users would be able to post and quote virtual instances of intentional fallacy by internet trolls and bots funded by the Azerbaijani government, and Azerbaijani internet users, then users would be able to correct the material and be able to open discussion on it. This would mimic a bulletin-blog style, where users would post a quote or headline one side of the site page, and then post a correction on the right side of the page. I am creating this project for truth seekers, and for Armenian/Non Armenian people who need to understand the intellectual damage that these users are causing on the internet.
For this exercise I was thinking a lot about colleges and inserting yourself into a collage, to somehow symbolize the varied and uncontrollable ways we exist on the internet. This is an idea I want to explore further in future projects in this class, but I want to represent the online presence looking back at you in a way, acting as a virtual mirror. Ones activities and content being a mirror of themselves. You are what you search?
This project is going to be the digital immersion of one’s voice disguised as a search of self in an online. With this website, a viewer is going to find questions asked sequentially on the screen, where they are going to have to answer verbally. The computer is going to record their series of answers into an audio buffer, and later ask the user to speak. When the user speaks, they will find that the computer is mirroring their voice through the voice it learned/gained through these interactions. The computer now has a voice, and it's yours. There will also be poems dispersed throughout the experience.
Music Video for Levitation 21 by Tigran Hamasyan. Tigran's music is often mathematical in its approach of musical ideas and form, and this piece is often discussed to be geometric in many ways. I wanted to represent the geometric and mathematical qualities of Tigran's music through this music video!
With this project I wanted to create an informational website on how Latiné communities can take responsibility for anti-black sentiments that are oftentimes never spoken about, acknowledging where these sentiments come from and an educational way to correct them with a target audience of the older Latiné generation. I wanted to speak about POC solidarity and the myths that surround this concept and how even in POC spaces black individuals are still facing oppressive forces. Originally this project was going to be entirely informative but while developing I tried to think of a way to honor the Afro-Latiné intersection and I have always loved creative collective websites and thought I would develop a framework of my own. I created the directory with the hope that while educating on issues that directly affect black communities and Latiné communities (in different ways) that there could also be a resource to take positive action in mitigating racism within POC communities.
We were inspired by the concept of land acknowledgment, which is often the final destination of honoring the displacement of Indigenous people-- but we know more can be possible. Restorative justice must go beyond words and performance. One of our team members on the project has been researching the history of their indigenous ancestors, their relation to their land and how it was taken from them, and contemporary movements to reclaim their place and culture. The visuals in our project represent the cultural traditions of this member’s ancestors, the Coahuiltecan people of what is now South Texas. This project brings restorative justice to Indigenous people and other historically marginalized communities by inviting the public to find and acquire digital “fusion crystal“ shards, digital art objects minted as NFTs which represent fractional investments designed to activate the construction of massive augmented reality monuments. The funds collected directly benefit descendants of the original stewards of the land where the monument is located. As each shard is purchased, the monument takes form. Once a full set of shards have been acquired, the monument is activated, emerging from a geolocated quilt of these shards and appearing in it’s full and final form.
I wanted to create an introductory language helper for Alaskan Yupik. I had the opportunity to spend time on Yupik land this last summer filming a documentary. Their people have been in constant battle with outside interests attempting to extract their natural resources for decades. I believe bringing awareness to the Yupik people in Alaska will help them in their fight. The land of Bristol Bay Alaska where many Yupik people live is some of the most untouched, wild land on the planet. It is also home to the worlds last great sockeye salmon run, allowing the people of Bristol Bay to live completely sustainably and independently on salmon year round. Bristol Bay must be protected, and finding ways to share the culture of its people will aid in that goal. This language helper gives you a visual overview of key cultural components of the Yupik peoples and also teaches you important words and phrases for basic communication. Simply click on the images and buttons to hear Yupik words and click listen in the music section to hear Yupik music.
Inspired by the constant change of human emotions. Whimsical colorful circles show up if clicked yet if left alone dark squares begin to show up.
"Why Didn't You Stop Me?" by Mitski is song full of passion, despair, synths, and guitar riffs. Using the webcam the user is faced with a warped version of themselves. The aesthetic for the music video was a computer virus fire, visualized by the flashing warm colors and ever-changing objects. The virtual fire swells as the music and emotions get more intense. When the lyrics "And paint it over" are sung the screen is consumed by the virtual fire, the user's image has been 'painted over' by those squares. The loop ends with the webcam having a flashing red filter over it, the user's reflection is now even more warped than before.
Why didn't you stop me? Why didn't you stop me? And paint it over.
This brush was inspired by “Artist and Computer” by atariarchives.org which featured several generative artists and its history. Generative art is living and constantly changing. I wanted to capture generative art's dynamic nature through this brush by starting with a pulsing, bland-looking circle, which eventually turns into a mesh of shapes and gradients.

A three part website attempting to dismantle the fetishization of biracial babies by demonstrating that they grow up into biracial adults with an intersecting social identity.
This piece focuses on surveillance. As surveillance technology develops, the dangers surrounding artificial bias also increases. The input bar at the bottom prompts users to enter their full name which then appears above the face, reflecting that that the identified face symbolizes the user.

Falling for You a is short romance simulator game based on personal experiences of a concussion. The player faces their own reflection through the webcam and the words get harder to read as the player becomes more unwell.
touch, do you remember the last time?
website that explores the environmental destruction prompted by imperialism and governmental domination
meditative experiment with layering sounds and warped, ai-generated visuals to accompany the experience
interactive healing journey inspired by rebirth, fire, and omnipresent angels
during the pandemic i think many of us have experienced news fatigue, but through my project i wanted to create a playlist visualizer that would slowly change from intensely sad to carefree dance music. this playlist is meant to be listened to in order but can also be shuffled. i created my own visual assets to use in this project and used audio files from youtube to implement into my program.
with this project i wanted to show how certain emotions can follow someone through their life, and materialize how these emotions can make anyone feel so isolated even if they are very common. i wanted this project to be horribly honest in hopes that someone could feel seen by this!
this was the first exercise for iml 300 and i mainly wanted to have our face exercise have some features that are not feeding into eurocentric beauty standards!
The first piece of work that I created in P5.js, Immediatly No is a piece for an exercise where we had to create a face.
This is a screenshot from an interactive work I did called The Star. The program is designed to almost let you create your own tarot card based on the setting of "The Star". The Star at its core represents hope, blessings, and new inspiration. Traditionally, the card shows a star, top, and center, with a person pouring water into a body of water. In this setting, the user is occupying the point of view of the person pouring water (which represents you lol). I thought it would be really cool to allow the user to create their own set within this space of hope and inspiration.
This project was an experiment with fractal trees and WEBGL. The user can control different aspects of the tree in real time and 3D space through sliders.
This project was inspired by the idea of a "living album cover". One that would not only play the music, but also visualize it through audio-reactive particle effects and animations. The next iteration of this project would be one where the user could upload any album cover, and the program would turn it into a living album cover.
Music video to Eventually, Darling by Declan McKenna Sexy aliens, angsty astronauts, and a flying red tesla, this work of art has everything a grimy Redditor could need. Ever had your heart broken? Well, have you ever had your heart broken in space? Now you can imagine what that would be like I guess…
An astronaut floats through space. They think back to the distant memory of an old relationship. One between themselves and an alien. We see the alien fall for someone else and then leave. Then we return back to the astronaut, still alone, floating into the endless void of nothingness.
The intersection between cute and creepy. Kinda like hairless cats. Or ur mom! I'm kidding I'm sure she's a lovely woman.
Enjoy the view as you wake up on the red planet.
Hypernarrative choose your own adventure game. Travel through space and converse with a REAL (made up) astronaut!
This website discusses the lack of representation of Latine culture in Hollywood. It explains the problem, gives statistics, outlines some solutions, and provides an assortment of latine film/television made in the US.
Fun RGB Kaleidoscope to use with webcam!
Randomly generated cubes
This project was an exercise in For Loops and the beginning of my experience with WEBGL.
The idea for this project came from personal experience - my mental health was pretty bad a few weeks ago, and it was very difficult to get anything done in terms of my work or external obligations. I was all too aware of the tasks I had to finish, or even start for that matter, but it felt like I was trapped in my own thoughts and negative emotions, with just slightly too little motivation to do anything at all. The concept of this website is a Thought Visualizer, with the end goal being to help anyone who feels like they are stuck in a mental hole climb out of it, if even just a little. The user is able to write their thoughts down on draggable nodes, and with each “thought” they move across the screen, a new motivational question or inspirational quote appears. They also have the ability to delete nodes, which speaks to the idea of clearing the negative thoughts or regressive desires from their mind. If they spend some time on the website, writing their thoughts down and deleting some, they might be left with only one node containing a positive or productive idea, which could then turn into a plan of action. The website is fairly minimal with a focus on aesthetics, but it does include an interactive intro sequence to give context to the project, an About section to direct the user, along with a selection of mental health support links from the resources offered by USC.
I wanted to utilize sound and interactive features to clearly communicate how easy it is to waste water! This is important especially considering the whole West coast in the U.S. is still in a drought. I was more specifically inspired by a leaky faucet since I had one back home, and I always wondered how much water was wasted. I would remember the sound of the drops whenever I would do homework late night in the kitchen. Thankfully it's fixed now!
~~FLASH WARNING~~ I wanted to explore the theme of surveillance, especially in Big Tech 𓁹 𓁹 Camera on, microphone tapped into, is this the new norm?
I sketched an Amazigh woman with her tattoos. Today in Morocco it is considered "haram" to have these tattoos but it is something sacred in Amazigh culture, the indigenous people of Morocco. It is usually done on women. The one on her chin is the palm tree, which represents fertility. The one on her furrow is a symbol of protection. I wanted to represent the current state of erasure of these tattoos so if you press the canvas you can view the tattoos once again. Amazigh (ⴰⵎⴰⵣⵉⵖ) means free person.
