Heesoo’s paternal great-grandmother
Dec 19th, 1905 ~ Jun 4th, 1996  

Jo Lee is Heesoo’s paternal great-grandmother and they lived together until Lee passed away in 1996. Lee said that her nickname is 맹꽁이(maengkkong-i), a kind hearted person who trusts people for exactly what they say, often much too literally. Lee had dementia when Heesoo first met her. Lee was a small, sweet hearted, quiet, and religious person. Lee’s daily routine consisted of looking at the virgin Mary and Jesus statues and praying.

Heesoo’s paternal grandmother

Feb 28th, 1934 ~ Sep 30th, 2009

Geun Hwa Kim is Heesoo’s paternal grandmother and they lived together until Kim passed away in 2009. Kim was a complex person with many unique characteristics. She was a strong single mom who raised her four kids and worked hard to support them financially. She had an arranged marriage with Heesoo’s grandfather when she was 18 years old. She didn’t know that he had two kids already from his previous marriage which fell apart because of the Korean War. After Heesoo’s grandfather returned from the war, he found his two kids alone, and that his wife had left the home. He married Heesoo’s grandmother, without ever mentioning his kids from his previous marriage, and one day, brought his two kids, both around 5 years old, to their house without any notice. Because his first wife just left the home during the Korean war, he wanted to put the kids on their family registry. To register the two kids as Kim’s kids, she needed to lie that she was five years older on the family registry, so that it was convincing that the kids were hers, because her real age, was too young to have two 7 year old kids.

Heesoo’s maternal grandmother
May 22nd, 1933 ~

Eun Sook Lee is Heesoo’s maternal grandmother. She was born in 1933 and currently living in Gong Ju, South Korea. Before Lee and her husband moved to Gong Ju, they lived in Han Nam Dong in Seoul.  Before she got ill, Lee used to cook a lot of delicious food for her daughter Mi Young and grandchildren.

The host of this universe, Heesoo Kwon, visualized her religion, Leymusoom’s godhead figure, as a snake woman or a female snake. Their body is fluid between the shape of a snake and a woman. The materiality of a snake’s body refers Kwon’s ritual of 탈피. 탈피 which has two definitions: 1) a description of an animal’s moulting process of the old exoskeleton, and 2) in relationship to a human, the process of moving forward, or away from a certain routine or habit. The reference to the female body’s figure refers to Kwon’s female ancestors and herself.

October 22nd, 1990 ~

Kwon was raised in a religious family and taught to accept the strict doctrines of her family’s religion. She was baptized into catholicism before she was 100 days old, before she could make her own decision or give consent about it.  “OBEY YOUR FATHER” was a dictum that her grandmother reiterated on a daily basis. Every morning, her grandmother called Kwon and her sister to read the Bible with her before they had breakfast. Her grandmother’s stance towards the Bible was obdurate. Whenever Kwon questioned quotes in the Bible, she said that they should just believe what the Bible says first and then they would understand the meaning of FATHER’s word later. On the other days when Kwon argued with her father about his patriarchal words, her grandmother told her that she should be obedient to her FATHER whatever the situation was. FATHER is the one who brought her into this world, so she should follow him and not question him. Now Kwon realized that her family believed in Catholicism and was highly influenced by patriarchy and confucianism. She was taught to believe in the elevated concept of FATHER.

Mi Young Kim is Heesoo’s mother and was born in 1966 and currently lives in Seoul. She is straightforward and honest, and artistic. She studied fashion design and worked as a lingerie designer before she got married.
