Strength in Numbers

Artist name Sarah Brophy
Artwork Description:

Strength in Numbers creates a window into an impossible but plausible natural scene, where fireflies are accumulating at an unfathomable pace. Through a clearing in the branches, the viewer peers into a forest where one lone firefly searches for others. Eventually the firefly is joined by another, and another, as a critical mass forms. As more fireflies answer these flickering calls, more of the scene becomes illuminated and revealed. Eventually, the firefly swarm becomes completely exaggerated and fantastical and together the creatures form a complex particle system that imitates the Aurora Borealis in a celebratory, surreal lightshow.

to various future times

Artist name Polina Kato
Artwork Description:

to various future times takes its name from the story by J. L. Borges The Garden of Forking Paths. Images and quotes from the essays written between 1935 and 2013 intermix on the web. Out of the context of their time and space, what do they project onto each moment the work is played? With the mouse move, you become the key part of the work.

The first United Ice Cream Assembly closes today

Artist name Hailing Liu
Artwork Description:

The first United Ice Cream closes today is a piece of fabricated news combining found footages and virtual images to craft a fictional ice cream world. According to the news a formal ice cream organization, United Ice Cream, addressed the first assembly to declare its mission of maintaining peace in this world. By using news format as a narrative framework, this film explores media representations, the relationship between personal will and political propaganda, and how incidents are transformed into information by the media.

Artwork title

Back Alley Twilight

Artist name Antony Lucchesi
Artwork Description:

Looking at the ideas of evoking atmosphere through fictional digital space as well as the idea of a 'non space' Back Alley Twilight is a 5 minute looping video of a dimly lit alleyway.
An alleyway is not seen as a desirable space to spend time in, yet the video asks the viewer to stay with this space a little longer than normal, the gentle sway of the camera give a meditate quality to the work and leaves the viewer with space to question the nature of spaces designed for us not to be in.

Artwork title

Im a Database

Artist name Gray Spangler
Artwork Description:

This short video is a preview of a larger video project about the ways in which databases shape and determine the visual confines of our imaginations and our ideas of personhood. In this piece I hope to explore the ways in which the bias (and violence) of dominant cultures such as those perpetuated by an ideology of white supremacy are embedded in these databases and reproduced by the algorithms into which they are fed, and how our feeding on these images (and ideologies) is literally and figuratively incorporated into but also rejected by our bodies. Finally I am interested in the implications and material consequences of the photos that aren’t prioritized by search engine algorithms or saved to the cloud as a site of both fear and possibility. Song is “Distant People” by Rắn Cạp Đuôi.

Artwork title

COSMOS

Artist name Leslie Zeng
Artwork Description:

COSMOS is a first-person video game that narrates embodiment, sexuality, birth, rebirth, and death. It takes place in various cosmic or void environments where the game has a singular mechanic, depending on what body the player has chosen. The player will begin as a bodiless "ghost" and will be able to choose a character after entering a mirror room. Eventually, the player will be navigated to the river Styx where they can choose to play the game again or exit the game.

Frontier Technologies

Artist name Maximiliano Cervantes
Artwork Description:

The most advanced technology in the world looms in the most underserved communities. Technological advancements in developed countries advertise to aid in our productivity, comfort and save lives. These statements are factual but also deceiving. However, I have been disappointed by my fascination with technologies after learning how the United States government uses tech to prey over people passing between Mexico and the United States. The video Frontier Technologies uses autoethnography to explore my relationship to labor and the technology that looms in the border landscape. By performing artistic labor, I build the border landscape, take a break to see how blimps monitor the border and finish by folding the border wall. The chroma key on a tarp and copy paper makes visible a future of no boundaries and allows me to print endangered species affected by the construction of the border wall. Using chroma key is resourceful because green allows for any object to be anything. Frontier Technologies lends Peter Campuses Three Transitions to visualize the invisible borderlands. With the increasing tension at the border, it is necessary to expose the aggressive infrastructure that voyeurs La Frontera and to examine the effects of a complicated history between Mexico and The United States.
