Statement:

The Spring 21 BA Senior Capstone Project Exhibition RE : SET features the culminating work of fifteen San José State University interdisciplinary student-artists spanning across two virtual exhibition platforms—New Art City and Kunstmatrix Gallery.

RE : SET resonated as a triple entendre for our exhibition, referring at once to:

1) RESET: the act of continuously adjusting ourselves, our work, and our learning together anew amidst deep uncertainty, escalating hate crimes, and the evolving and inequitable conditions and impact of COVID-19;

2) RE: the act of directing our attention to, or concerning ourselves with, meaningful goals and directions; and

3) SET: exploring a collection, a formal or conceptual pattern, a set of variables, etc.

Students drew upon a wide range of media, conceptual strategies, and concerns. From the meditative to playful, from dark / tender entanglements to unlikely hope, they developed an innovative, and often durational way of making and “re-setting” their work, over time—often without practical studio facilities and resources. On behalf of the SJSU Department of Art & Art History, we’d like to thank you for visiting and celebrating the risk-taking and resilient work of the Spring ‘21 Senior Project students!

I put a GoPro on my dog (dog half)

Artist name Stephanie Reno
Artwork Description:

This is a simple comparative piece exploring the difference between my point of view and that of my dog, Latte. She's an inspiration for a lot of my work - I'm fascinated with how non-human animals experience life, especially when their lives tend to be so much shorter than ours. These three videos are meant to compare and contrast our differing viewpoints, both physically and mentally.
This is the video that was filmed from Latte's point of view.

Inevitable Screen

Artist name Ron Mina
Artwork Description:

Nowadays, the addiction to smartphones and social media is a daily recurring activity that prompts us to encounter stages of insomnia, procrastination, and a loss of in-person communication and focus on other crucial life tasks as if this was the type of technology that controls us.

By using digital imaging photography and a single-shot video with embedded experimental sound effects, my goal for this project was to deliver a sense of mutuality, but also to express my personal levels and perspectives leaning towards this theme.

Look Into My Eyes

Artist name Ron Mina
Artwork Description:

My goal for this single-shot video with embedded experimental sound effects was to provide the viewers the experience of smartphone and social media addiction as if this project was to be installed in a physical space rather than a virtual.

What is being seen is a phone encircled by a charger and headphone wires. On the phone screen, there's a single-shot video of my eyes looking straight ahead as an overall representation of eye contact to the viewer from the phone. The sound effects are metaphorical to raising temptation in one's mind to pull their phones out and check their social media notifications.

Shape of the World

Artist name Jedd Panopio
Artwork Description:

For this project I wanted to use 3D models again to create a portal-like scene using randomly generated shapes. I wanted to explore the idea of randomness in this project but I am also relating this to my first capstone where I explore the idea of escape during this time of quarantine.

Capstone 2 Project: Stillness and Peace

Artist name Alexandra Baker
Artwork Description:

I work in videography and I had an inspiration to create an ASMR style project in which I worked on self realization. I found myself implementing how I was working in reality through my footage and the way I was editing. I could not slow down and it showed in my work. It occurred to me as I edited my footage, my real life was going faster than I would like and that I was not physically slowing myself down to enjoy myself. This was really a reflection on my own life and focusing on ASMR helped my focus in the process of slowing down in real life. The process of developing the work helped me to get centered and have that much needed self realization on just how “busy” and “fast paced” I am physically and mentally. It is true that your emotions and mental state shine through in your artwork and you really see just how much you have to take the time to enjoy the process of the occasional “slowing yourself down,” to regain that mindfulness of being calm. With this project I was able to just immerse myself and my audience into a multi channel video with slower moving images and softer sounds.

Escape

Artist name Jedd Panopio
Artwork Description:

I want to create a world where the viewer is only focused on the environment itself and appreciating it for what it is. I want the viewer to be immersed in the world to escape from this reality. I took into account the feedback I got from peers and the professor and thought about what kind of immersive environment I wanted to create. These environments will be low-poly fantasy landscape environments that look futuristic and alien like, as if its from a different planet. My next steps are to be able to add different things to the environment to fully give that scenic feel. As for the final product itself, I want to animate and make a cinematic scene/trailer of what the environment looks like as well as possibly include a navigable version on Mozilla Hubs as my way of presenting the work.

Soumatou ~走馬灯~

Artist name Mona Kaji
Artwork Description:

I made this Soumatou lantern for meditation. In Japan, Soumatou is a reflection that is supposed to be seen on the verge of death. I was wondering what kind of scenes I would see when I was about to die. I kept a dream diary because dreams reflect impressive memories in my life and surmised that I would see the impressive memories when I die. I made this animation based on that dream and let the animation play in the lantern.

Meditative Figures

Artist name Umika Mathur
Artwork Description:

Meditative Figures, 2021 is a series which consists of three paintings of different figures that have their own meanings through certain symbols, shapes, colors, and placements of each detail which all come together as their own “figure”. Each painting represents Love, Strength, and Balance. My intention was to place certain meanings into my art and communicate each message through my choice of medium and colors and shapes as well.

This Does Not Define Me

Artist name Jiho Park
Artwork Description:

This Does Not Define Me is a piece that I have created to combat my intrusive thoughts. Oftentimes I find myself in a loop when it comes to my thinking. For instance, a feeling I get constantly is anxiety. My chest will tighten up and all I can think is of my mortality: it causes me to freeze up and I am left helpless. I am unable to do anything because of this feeling and it feels like I am merely a prisoner of my own emotions. This is not only limited to negative feelings however as I feel the same way when I constantly remind myself that I am happy. On very good days where it feels like nothing can stop me, my happiness radiates into everything that I do that day. Through these constant ups and downs and cycles of emotions I have realized that I am not defined by whatever emotion I am feeling. I have learned through this project that I have to remind myself my emotions are supposed to come and go. We are defined by how we react to our emotions and sometimes we must survive by solely existing.
