When humans find themselves unable to escape from their predicaments in the real world, they can choose to escape into the the final liminal space. This is the purpose of the liminal — to serve as a refuge between the realms of reality and virtuality. The liminal is a fuzzy state, a transition between the 2D and 3D, a crack between the real and the virtual. Its outward manifestation is a proliferating and mutating playground, an endless dream shrouded in halos. The chaotic liminal space points towards the ultimate fantasy of returning to the mother's womb.

Bohan Wang is a big fan of monster and robot culture. He is used to creating wacky and cute characters with illustration and 3d modelling. After binge-listening to Radio head's song Paranoid Android, he created a collection of sequential illustrations inspired by this song about paranoid robots travelling through parallel universes to take down monsters that annoy him. These villains may be projections of Bohan's childhood experiences or visualisations of his dreams, but the robot won't know he's a projection of someone else's dream, he'll just continue on his paranoid adventures.

This drag look was initially created as a part of a collective series celebrating and commemorating the popularity of the Barbie film from 2023. As a giant steampunk barbie doll, the look attempts to capture a cultural moment where kitsch and nostalgia meet advocacy around feminism and femme identities, and in turn becomes an intersectional reflection on femme-presenting gender performance within pop culture. The structural dress was crafted and assembled from flat Eva foam boards, and subsequently coated, decorated and hand-painted upon. The accompanying music piece the artist composed also presents a nostalgically futuristic melody, situating the sculptural 3D drag piece within a retro-avant-garde aesthetic style and headspace.

I really like McDonald's Happy Meals, so I imagine the felt tapestry as a tray for the meal. On it, I construct a joyful tiny park, It's not a high-end amusement park; it's the kind of playground you find in the neighborhood.   I like the ambiguous 'multifunctional shapes.' For example, a pink slide with a little window can be both a slide itself and possibly a homeless person's home. Another example is when someone can't play on a seesaw; they can imagine a light and ethereal little ghost companion on the other side.

The two little dwarfs with pointy hats in the middle of the picture are having a beautiful dream: In this dream, other little dwarfs wearing hats of various shapes surround them. The little dwarfs hide among houses, caterpillars, clouds, trees, flowers, the moon, and the stars, perhaps singing and strolling. According to folklore, as soon as a little dwarf falls asleep, their friends and the forest in which they reside watch over their dreams in their own way in the real world.

"Shapes of the Unseen" is an art project that delves into the beauty of the mundane. Inspired by everyday sights such as dusty outlines on untouched plates, indentations of chairs on carpets and random doodles, I see a world full of unnoticed shapes. I collected these easily overlooked yet warming shapes and transformed them into a new, immersive space through a variety of graphic mediums. Appreciating the subtle patterns that quietly define our lives in a realm where the trivial is magnified.

Neither a harbinger of nightmares nor a weaver of saccharine sonnets or celestial bliss, my role defies clear definition. It's akin to a narrative plucked from a Japanese novel, where a benevolent raven, with arduous pecks, gifts the eyes of others to a blind girl, enabling her to perceive life through varied lenses, until she dons the eyes of a victim.

Do join me in this exploration,
Venture beneath the dark velvet curtain.
Where the Cheshire Cat, in its elusive whimsy, mirrors the unpredictable,
Wagging its tail in anger, growling in delight,
Defying the straightforward nature of the dog, who barks in ire and wags in mirth,
how you define the mad one?
