Introducing Ep 2: HYPNAGOGIA
For the past year, we’ve been talking a lot about the state between wakefulness and sleep. Some of us have adopted unusual patterns for sleeping and waking. In what ways have we been translating our waking hours over the last year? We became reliant on digital ways of staying connected heavier than usual due to the pandemic and social distancing. Our concept of space and time are taking new shape and form again as life becomes more social.
This year’s group show will present artists who have been working with AI, AR, VR, 3D audiovisuals, and a special collaboration with @pollinations.ai for a real-time AI AV livestream.

Albert.DATA is a contemplative project of a human artist slowly mutating into “data”. A transformative journey about the meaning of being human, the boundaries of perception, experience, existence and identity. The first outcome of the project will be an audiovisual experience for Nintendo Game Boy, GB Colour, GB Advance (and corresponding emulators). An 8-bit artistic experience that experiments with A.I.-generated artworks inside this iconic retro console and exploits its sound hardware. RELEASE DATE: Early to Mid 2022 Acknowledgments: GBStudio nitro2k01 Geen Boy Games
What is the end of time if not an invitation to the moment? This NFT has been conceived by ‘The Scenius Machine’ - an AI idea generator trained on great thinkers of the past, present and future. The word scenius acknowledges innovation is often the product of a community more than just an individual. These generative ideas come from replicating the dynamics of synergetic thinking, smashing together seemingly disparate concepts until they create novelty. Each purchase of an NFT allows access into the community, and comes with a say in which datasets are included and which outputs are explored. All original sources are listed at the time of minting and will be contacted irrespective of whether the final work resembles their original contribution or not. The Scenius Machine also supports the governance of this profile. ------------------------------------------------------- Sam Potter is an artist, musician and writer based in Berlin. Often using speculative design, his work seeks to use storytelling as a means to map out better possible worlds in the near future. These research driven projects look specifically at the human implications of emerging technologies. Using any medium that speaks to the senses, Potter translates often complex nonhuman processes like artificial intelligence into expressions of emotive art. His collective dream experiences - powered by an algorithm fed on dreams - have unfolded across Europe including the BBC, Universal Records and most recently with Secret Cinema.
Contrapuntal Lines is a composition elaborated from oscillators generating visual patterns on a cathode-ray tube television and sonifications of their interactions. ------------------------------------------------------- Sean Russell Hallowell is a composer of audiovisual music from San Francisco. His time-based art takes inspiration from the affordances of outmoded media technologies, like analog audiotape and cathode-ray tube televisions. Concert works and multimedia installations of his have been premiered across the US as well as in Mexico, Chile, South Korea, Japan, Belgium, the UK, and Iceland. Areas of experimental inquiry include the phenomenology of time and music in counterpoint to the other three Medieval arts of number — arithmetic, geometry, and astronomy. Livecoded Compositions is the collaborative project between Char Stiles and Dan Gorelick to create audio-visual performances live with code. “Livecoding” is editing and recompiling code on the fly to create visuals and/or music. The visuals are created by using a shader language GLSL, and the music is created with a coding library called TidalCycles and Prophet 6 synthesizer. Livecoded Compositions celebrates the serendipity and joy that can arise out of programming as a creative medium for performance and collaboration. This song “Drives on Fire” is sung from the viewpoint of an old personal computer who suspects it might have been hacked to mine cryptocurrency, while the processes indicate it’s a search function. To learn more about live-coding communities visit https://livecode.nyc or https://avclubsf.com. ------------------------------------------------------- Char Stiles is an artist, educator and programmer based in Brooklyn, NY. She works creatively in the lower levels of computational systems to bring to light how computers work. Char works and collaborates across mediums such as interactive installation, video, performance and web. She is a part of the Livecode.nyc collective, where she organizes shows, and livecodes music and visuals. She has given talks and led workshops at Carnegie Mellon University, Duke University, University of Limerick, MIT and NYU. She has performed internationally at places like SXSW and Gray Area. Dan Gorelick (dan.dog) is a Brooklyn and SF based musician who works with cello, voice, and synthesis to create expressive electronic soundscapes. His musical style is influenced by his upbringing as a classical cellist, improvisational jazz, and exploration in different forms of sound design. His performances integrate acoustic practices with various technologies to explore sonic possibilities between the two. He has given talks, led workshops, and gave performances at Gray Area, SF Conservatory of Music, Babycastles, School for Poetic Computation, and SXSW. Dan is also an organizer for AVClubSF and livecodeNYC artist collectives.
skulptor is the solo-electronic-frequency project by nyc-based ai creative technologist and producer ana roman. the classically multi-instrumentalist is also a midi-specialist and Ableton certified instructor. the intensely hyper-future, emotionally aware, and highly immersive frequencies are inspired by an intense focus on the inner workings of insectile wing-beat frequency, biomimicry, natural cybernetics (mycology-fungi) perceived through the lens of a dreamlike atmosphere. What remains is a GAN family created out of physical and psychological survival in the year 2020-2021 P.C. (pre/post covid). These familial coping mechanisms are NOT dystopian beacons - but lights in the dark synthesized and mechanized through the lens of data ai ethics, transhumanism, and the avatarization of the non-binary self. Roman’s deep concern for their own neurodivergent diagnosis forced them to go deep into psilocybin therapy and explore new methods of sound expressionism. Spatial, generative, and organic-earth-tech sounds give way to rhythms inspired by conditions of over-progress, isolationism, and coded bias found in global surveillance.

Carmen 703 Hz was created using an ancient in-real-life 2000 year old Lar - a brass Roman figurine held at Guildhall Museum. The Lar was used as a sensing object to create a piece of abstract electronic vocal music made using the artist's trAnSition AI app. Lars were kept as household gods - as confidants and protectors. The Lar's natural harmonic resonances peaked at 703Hz - and the piece of music was built around this frequency - giving voice to its mystical, silent protection. The music created as part of 10 Songs for a Lar - Kent-Medway Museum Partnership. The visuals were made using bespoke animation, and a touchdesigner-pollinations hybrid to create unique sound reactive movement - bringing the Lar to life once again. Accompanying this music film is also a 7 part NFT release on Foundation.app. ------------------------------------------------------- Anil Sebastian is a multifaceted artist, producer and creative director creating some of the most unique and acclaimed music to emerge from the UK in recent years. Already a familiar face to many in the industry as co-founder and director of the legendary London Contemporary Voices Choir, working with over 20 Grammy winning artists including Alt-J, Imogen Heap and U2 as well at several iconic fashion shows for Burberry and Tommy Hilfiger, BBC Proms and the Harry Potter Play soundtrack. Following their acclaimed debut album Mesonoxian, Anil featured on legendary Björk/Madonna producer Guy Sigsworth’s debut Stet alongside Imogen Heap and Martin Grech. In 2020, Anil Sebastian’s immersive short film Daffodil exploring AI, grief and consciousness was released on NOWNESS. Sebastian is currently collaborating with Ai-Da, the first ever humanoid robot performance artist for their second film. From soundtracking the BEPI Colombo Mercury Mission (European Space Agency) to embarking on a 3 year research partnership with University of Sheffield about AI and Sonic Branding, the breadth of Sebastian’s work is utterly unique. Indeed, recent commissions have included a water ballet for Loomaland’s Robot Swans (Submerge Festival) as well working with young people from Kent Refugee Action Network to welcome War Horse creators' refugee puppet Little Amal to the UK - garnering wide spread coverage and acclaim in all major UK newspapers. Anil Sebastian also the Co-Founder and Director of Trans Voices - the UK's first ever professional trans+ choir, debuting in February 2022 with a specially commissioned music documentary on Guardian Films.

This NFT was designed to help my grandmother back into her memories. It is made up of old family photos, postcards of meaningful picnic spots, botanical illustrations of flowers from her garden, stories from my childhood and her favourite song stretched over time. Whilst it's a little scary for her right now, it shows how generative technologies can create a space for recollection in the near future. See your past from a new perspective with these new forms of machine learning medicine. They can be used for memory related disorders like Dementia but also for other audience-led entertainment and detailed memory inspection. This NFT was conceived, in part, by 'The Scenius Machine', an AI idea generator trained on great thinkers both past and present. ------------------------------------------------------- Sam Potter is an artist, musician and writer based in Berlin. Who are we without technology? How has the technology we use formed us as human beings? In answering these questions and not laughing in avoidance, I discovered that my first physical object bought with my own money was a Playstation, with money I received from basically being a freak of nature…or someone that doesn’t react on their skin from allergies, but just gets really asthmatic. Recently, while living in Osaka, Japan, I revisited this memory and found a used Playstation console and some games I couldn’t read. When booting it up, the sound overwhelmed me. I believe it was the most beautiful sound I ever heard, something that shook my soul, something that rumbled nostalgia and uplifted from the root of my being a force inside of me. I realized I would be nothing without my love for this machine, that I would never have looped back around to visiting it, even with its 5th generation of child being released days before. This love, no…this respect for machines inspired this series of works called PSNONE, in a deep omage to the emotional value of both art and machines, and their origin in my life, a spinning cube. —----------------------------------------------------- The Glad Scientist (b. Daniel Sabio) is a Puerto Rican media artist fusing poetry, sound, emergent technology and gaming into interactive installations and performances. Highly collaborative in their process, they have seen success in a diverse set of contexts, as a musician, VFX artist, interaction designer, programmer, and director. As a director and solo artist, their work focuses on the transformative properties of immersive and interactive art, particularly its potential to shapeshift worldviews with a single experience. This elusive purpose has led to creations focused on ancient practices, occult traditions, and quantum mechanics, to name a few. Some of their favorite collaborations include those with Nicole Ruggiero, Roark Bailey, and members of the Japanese experimental band BOREDOMS. Their work has reached international acclaim, showing in galleries in Berlin, Tokyo, Shanghai, and New York, and in large-scale events such as Ars Electronica, ISEA, SXSW, and the Venice Biennale. Professionally, they have worked with Fortune-500 companies (Google, Under Armour, IDEO) as well as various startups as clients, bringing artistic vision and creative direction to unlikely contexts.

Conjured by an algorithm trained on thousands of dreams collected over the last few years. The AI Dream Machine has been busy making simulated collective dreams with dreams from BBC Radio listeners, a pop band's fans, Berlin lockdown dreamers and the entire dream diary of outsider artist February Montaine (who's music plays in the background). Thanks to February's former partner Amelia for the paintings that guided Katherin Crowson and Chigozie Nri's VQGAN+CLIP notebook for this NFT. The AI Dream Machine continues to create large-scale collective dreaming experiences including an immersive theatre experiment with Secret Cinema later this year where the audience will all feel like they are in the same dream. This NFT was conceived, in part, by 'The Scenius Machine', an AI idea generator trained on great thinkers past and present. Artwork will be minted upon request.
