Statement:

A group of different rejected paintings juxtaposed with a text on the term "Emerging". The themes and subjects are quite diverse, some are self-portraiture, others are on landscape, and many were created specifically for a themed open-call yet did not make it. For example, one green painting titled "The Green Room" by Zai Pacardo was specifically produced for an open call about the color green. Now these de-contextualized artworks have other meaning away from the original open-calls intentions.

I haven't applied to anything with my art before so I wouldn't say this work has been rejected, because I don't like exhibitions and what they stand for but I could get behind this.

Yellow over White [Comporta]

Artist name Rafael Raposo Pires
Artwork Description:

The artwork in question is a photograph titled Yellow over White [Comporta], belonging to a series of photographs that question the idea of a border within a village. In this case how the perimeter of a building is ornamented by a yellow stripe, finishing at a shape that gives visual strength to the edge of the building. The physical artwork measures 40x60cm and it is an inkjet print on fine-art paper, from 2020. The artwork ended up never being showcased apart from the walls at my atelier. It was rejected at a Poster (outdoors) exhibition open call, due to “high volume of great quality applications” which is fair for today’s artworks affluence. Later it was rejected at a more casual open call due to “lack of space on the walls”.

The Cause and the Reason

Artist name Majd Masri
Artwork Description:

What is the definition of the “Truth”? where do we find it? Does it really exist in the world we live in? or is it a fantasy of fiction? “Existence”, what does it really mean? Is there really a “Life after Death”? does it really exist? is there an end, a last explosion, a demise? or is it such a fairytale?
The conflict between existence and absence is the same as the conflict between evil and good. It’s a long form of contradictions and differences that distinguishes one from the other.
Contradictions and differences between myself and I, where am I and where are you from these contradictions?
The universe surrounds me with infinite vibrations and fuzziness. However, engaging with these vibrations causes an unexpected hysterical state of mind creating an unusual person who is trying to fit in with his non-existent thoughts. A storm of lines heading towards nothingness and emptiness awaits an explanation of what is happening. Overthinking all these thoughts exposes me to a storm of anxiety. This is what I am trying to reflect every time on a piece of paper.
Due to the actions, experiences, and situations I go through during my daily life, I’ve started to take notes about the things that excite my curiosity. until I found out that most of these notes were described and defined by one philosophy status which is “ the cause and the reason”!
Illusion and logic are the main two words that I'm focusing at, in this project.
Most of my artwork is abstract, and I’m always trying to express my feelings on canvas. For me, Space, Colors, and Lines are clear, but to others, I always have to explain and write something to let these lines speak. Despite the fact that they don’t have to, I still hear the questions “what, why, and where”?
In my opinion, Sketches are so similar to the universe, they both start and end in a mysterious way, in a way that we can't explain or understand.
sketches are the neglected source of the great final result that is shown to the public, and all I'm trying to
do is to highlight the importance of these sketches to the public. therefore, I will be working on producing Sketches painting from those sketches.

The Green Room

Artist name Zai Pacardo
Artwork Description:

The Green Room was specifically made for a themed open call. I've, of course, had my fair share of rejections already, but this was the first one I'd entered wherein I had to make new work. This is why I chose to submit this piece — because it was the most hard-hitting rejection I've had in a while. The Green Room represents the struggle and insecurity I've harbored earlier this year. I was struggling to create, thinking that it was only a waste of time and resources. I could not bear to touch my paints and canvases, in fear that I would waste them. All I had plaguing my mind was green. Besides the reference to the color of wealth, green is also the color I despised working with the most. This, to me, also symbolizes the intense anxiety, anger, and loneliness one feels when dealing with circumstances far beyond their control. On a positive note, I have grown to love this piece. Dare I say it may even be my favorite, despite my noted abhorrence for the color.

The Emerging

Artist name Dovydas Laurinaitis
Artwork Description:

I’m proposing my proposal for an exchange residency I applied for a month ago (or so).
The prompt was to write about our practice in response to the word ‘emerging’, and off the back of a few particularly frustrating rejections, I wrote this text. The feedback I received was that ‘the jury had a hard time grasping the motivation of your project that would be done specifically in [redacted place]’. I felt that I was pretty clear about my intent of demolishing one of the gallery walls.

I think this is a great project, especially to battle in some way with the inevitable bitterness that comes with participating in these systems.

Artist name Islam Allam
Artwork Description:

These are portraits I work on without restricting with the original facial feature and leave a space for experimentation and improvisation, the features here play as a guideline only, as an attempt to highlight my view while working on portraiture through improvising. I'm trying to create a new visual material different from reality and not constrained by the realism of the original facial features. In addition to listening to specific music during the improvisation process, This music plays an important role in interactively guiding me during the improvisation process as a compass that guides me to reach the result that I am trying to form as a visual result the portraits.

The project is a book/album containing 14 digital portraits, each portrait is inspired by the faces of characters who will be chosen - from the Internet - randomly as a reference for the work on the portraits, either because there is previous knowledge between me and these people with pictures, as friends on the Instagram platform or through the different sites from the internet, provided that the image used as a reference for portrait work from the general published content and it is allowed to share and publish it.

Rejection story: I work on this project intermittently when I find the time for that, as life pressures and responsibilities are sometimes an obstacle to the completion of artistic projects, and I was hoping to find some kind of grant to devote a period of time to complete this project. Indeed, I submitted it to one of the institutions that provide grants to artists to devote themselves to the completion of artistic projects, but the project was not accepted.
