The Hazards of Science

Artist name Lewis Thomas
Artwork Description:

The codeword for criticism of science and scientists these days is hubris. Once you've said that word, you've said it all; it sums up, in a word, all of today's apprehensions and misgivings in the public mind — not just about what is perceived as the insufferable attitude of the scientists themselves but, enclosed in the same word, what science and technology are perceived to be doing to make this century, this near to its ending, turn out so wrong.

Amerihcc Licc

Artist name Brian Contreras
Artwork Description:

Film, spoken word

Amerihcc Licc presents an exploration of the intersection between nature and technological evolution through video. In Amerihcc Licc, cows undergo a transformation into chimeras, rendered in a striking black-and-white aesthetic that highlights the simplicity of colored doodles. The dynamic backgrounds, featuring an array of patterns: cowhide, zebra stripes, cheetah spots, houndstooth, and camouflage, are a visual commentary on the multifaceted advancements in science, including medicine, aesthetics, and agriculture. Each pattern symbolizes the complexities of contemporary identity. Amerihcc Licc invites viewers to contemplate the implications of our relentless pursuit of innovation.

The accompanying poem articulates the enduring essence of motherhood amidst these transformations. It captures the nurturing bond between mother and baby, emphasizing that though science fiction is slowly becoming reality, the love inherent in motherhood remains unwavering. Amerihcc Licc champions this vital connection. Amerihcc Licc reaffirms that while transformation is an intrinsic part of our existence, some bonds transcend change, grounding us in our shared experience as living beings.

The first humans were created by the gods to serve them and keep the world in balance. The first humans were perfect in every way, but they were also naïve and easily led astray. The gods grew tired of their shenanigans and decided to destroy them. The second humans were created from the blood of the first humans. They were stronger and wiser, but still prone to error. The gods gave them free will, but also tasked them with the responsibility of keeping the world in balance. The third humans were created from the clay of the earth. They were the first humans to be truly mortal. The gods gave them intelligence and the ability to reason, but they were also flawed and susceptible to temptation. The fourth humans were created from the fire of the sun. They were the first humans to be born with the capacity for evil. The gods gave them free will, but also tasked them with the responsibility of keeping the world in balance. The fifth humans were created from the water of the sea. They were the first humans to be born with the capacity for good. The gods gave them free will, but also tasked them with the responsibility of keeping the world in balance. The sixth humans were created from the wind. They were the first humans to be born with the capacity for both good and evil. The gods gave them free will, but also tasked them with the responsibility of keeping the world in balance. The seventh humans were created from the sperm of the first humans. They were the first humans to be born with the capacity for love. The gods gave them free will, but also tasked them with the responsibility of keeping the world in balance. The eighth humans were created from the egg of the first humans. They were the first humans to be born with the capacity for life. The gods gave them free will, but also tasked them with the responsibility of keeping the world in balance. The ninth humans were created from the dust of the earth. They were the first humans to be born with the capacity for death. The gods gave them free will, but also tasked them with the responsibility of keeping the world in balance. The tenth humans were created from the breath of the first humans. They were the first humans to be born with the capacity for both life and death. The gods gave them free will, but also tasked them with the responsibility of keeping the world in balance.

LIBER FUNGUS

Artist name Xristina Sarli, Sophie Strand, C.G Jung, Ai
Artwork Description:

Worms. Ants. Maggots. Beetles. Mushrooms. Death was almost the moment when life overflowed its cup. Death wasn’t an end of life. It was the end of the singular. The deer decayed out of its shape into explosive, generative plurality. One narrative diverged into four hundred narratives”

“If I feel myself, like the compost heap, beginning to melt, it means that I am also melting into another story. A bigger story. A wider cast of characters. Let me dance between ripe and rot. I don’t know what act in the play comes next. But I know what my prayer is. Make me bigger than an “I”. Make me good soil.

Rooster Dance

Artist name Luigi Serafini, Terrabytes Glitch Lab, AI
Artwork Description:

3D models from Codex Seraphinianus
The Codex is an encyclopedia in manuscript with copious hand-drawn, colored-pencil illustrations of bizarre and fantastical flora, fauna, anatomies, fashions, and foods.[4] It has been compared to the still undeciphered Voynich manuscript,[5] the story "Tlön, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius" by Jorge Luis Borges,[6] and the artwork of M. C. Escher[7] and Hieronymus Bosch.[3][4]

The illustrations are often surreal[4][7][8] parodies of things in the real world, such as a bleeding fruit, a plant that grows into roughly the shape of a chair and is subsequently made into one, and a copulating couple who metamorphose into an alligator. Others depict odd, apparently senseless machines, often with delicate appearances and bound by tiny filaments. Some illustrations are recognizable as maps or human faces, while others (especially in the "physics" chapter) are mostly or totally abstract.[3] Nearly all of the illustrations are brightly coloured and highly detailed.

Animal Studies, Non Human Studies, and Chimeric Designer Baby Enrichment

Artist name Adam Zaretsky, Terrabytes Glitch Lab, TTT LABS
Artwork Description:

We are focused on the artificial implantation of
germline gene-edited interspecies transgenic
human chimeras. These are so-called Designer
Babies or Genetically Modified Children. So the
subtext to our questioning is research on the
interpretation of human chimeras from the
perspective of Animal Studies, emphasizing
concepts of animal enrichment and ‘the animal
turn’. It is supposed that some human
modifications would be born with genes from
other species and would therefore be partially
outside of the definition of human. Therefore, we
can debate about judgment of what is subhuman
and what is superhuman but the concept of
architecture, environmental stimulation and other
forms of ethological enrichment do cross over from
understanding your organism to intuiting care for
mutant human kin.

Neo Sex - Novel Technical Repro strategies

Artist name Adam Zaretsky, Terrabytes Glitch Lab, TTT LABS
Artwork Description:

The politics and global economics of surrogate
mother as fertility production factory, the history
of eugenics and neo-eugenics especially in terms of
medically approved forced sterilization programs,
concepts of global birth control used against
racialized populations, poor, radical and/or
indigenous people, seen along with fetal politics,
the a woman's right to a legal abortion and
understanding the 'selective reduction' abortion
tech of IVF. Your research can engage in
prototyping the latest in artificial womb research,
social and libidinal effects of artificial germ cells in
reproduction, male pregnancy (mPreg), queer
pregnancy (qPreg), ovum pickup, creative
cryogenic sperm/ova/embryo banking.
Additionally, the art of transgenic germline
tailoring knock-ins leads to speculative forms of
embryo grading, on being born a chimera and
posthuman/next.human family planning as well as
semi-living death studies and eco-burial and other
semi-dignities for implant rejected zygotes.

selective abortion, being born a chimera, queer
pregnancy (qPreg), embryonic development,
preimplantation genetic diagnosis, In Vitro

Repro Options and Origins of Sex

Artist name Bruce Bagemihl, TTT Labs, Terra Bytes Glitch Lab
Artwork Description:

Bruce Bagemihl's Biological Exuberance is a landmark book that will change forever how we look at nature.

Homosexuality in its myriad forms has been scientifically documented in more than 450 species of mammals, birds, reptiles, insects, and other animals worldwide. Biological Exuberance is the first comprehensive account of the subject, bringing together accurate, accessible, and nonsensationalized information. Drawing upon a rich body of zoological research spanning more than two centuries, Bagemihl shows that animals engage in all types of nonreproductive sexual behavior. Sexual and gender expression in the animal world displays exuberant variety, including same-sex courtship, pair-bonding, sex, and co-parenting―even instances of lifelong homosexual bonding in species that do not have lifelong heterosexual bonding.

Part 1, "A Polysexual, Polygendered World," begins with a survey of homosexuality, transgender, and nonreproductive heterosexuality in animals and then delves into the broader implications of these findings, including a valuable perspective on human diversity. Bagemihl also examines the hidden assumptions behind the way biologists look at natural systems and suggests a fresh perspective based on the synthesis of contemporary scientific insights with traditional knowledge from indigenous cultures.

Part 2, "A Wondrous Bestiary," profiles more than 190 species in which scientific observers have noted homosexual or transgender behavior. Each profile is a verbal and visual "snapshot" of one or more closely related bird or mammal species, containing all the documentation required to support the author's often controversial conclusions.

TRN 8

Artist name MR. NOGOFOLLOW, TERRABYTES GLITCH LAB, AI
Artwork Description:

My avatar stands tall, with a presence that commands attention yet invites reflection. Its body shimmers with a blend of *deep blue and emerald hues*, representing the oceans and forests of my ancestry, while fractal patterns of *gold and silver light* pulse across its skin like living energy. Around the head, a *halo of Nsibidi symbols* glows softly, signifying the wisdom passed down through generations.

The eyes are *calm yet piercing*, reflecting both the depth of ancestral knowledge and the forward-thinking vision of a creator who sees beyond the present moment. The clothing is a fusion of traditional African fabrics—rich in texture and pattern—with futuristic materials, blending the old and the new in a seamless narrative. The feet are grounded in *swirling water*, symbolizing fluidity and adaptability, while the arms reach out with grace and strength, ready to embrace change, ready to inspire.

In its interaction with others, the avatar moves fluidly, its body language reflecting a deep understanding of both the world and the self. It is a bridge between worlds—between the digital and the physical, between the past and the future, between hardship and triumph. This avatar is me, fully realized: a testament to resilience, a beacon of hope, and a reflection of the greatness I am striving for in my art, my work, and my life.

Stamping Genes: A Speculative Union of Flamingo, Urchin, and Rice

Artist name Kristin Lucas, Nathalie Dubois Calero
Artwork Description:

In this speculative performance, flamingos undergo a
ritualistic transformation through an experimental IVF
implantation of sea urchin microbiota and genes (through
sperm release), using rice as a biological interface between
flamingos, humans and sea urchins. The hybridized flamingos
begin to vibrantly and vigorously stamp the sediment while
feeding on hand-tossed rice, enhancing the soil's properties to
support the ecosystem and in doing so, enriching both
flamingo and sea urchin nutrition and breeding capacities.
The process begins with a ceremonial washing in seawater to
remove the old microbiota, followed by the introduction of the
new urchin microbiota through a ritualistic application to the
flamingos' skin. As the rice interface passes a chemical
reaction to the flamingos, they begin stamping the ground
while eating rice, their bodies transforming and growing
additional legs, symbolizing increased productivity and
adaptability. The performance climaxes as the flamingos, now
with multiple legs, move with heightened speed and
complexity, representing a fusion of species and new gene
expression. The scene ends with the transformed
flamboyance of flamingos standing together, embodying both
land and sea, as the sounds of sea urchins and flamingos and
distant calls echo through a transformed ecological
landscape, signifying the preservation and continuation of this
new evolutionary form.

the combination of philosophy, science and art. I am eager to explore how bioart can engage
with these fields.
What are the core values or themes that drive your work?
I am very interested in biomimicry as a way to integrate nature-inspired solutions into my work. I
observe The human interaction with nature-ecosystems.
How would you describe your creative or research process?
It is my first time that I tryied to expand my interests in the field of Bioart. My creative process is
deeply intertwined with both artistic intuition and scientific exploration. I begin by immersing
myself in the biological concepts and phenomena that intrigue me, often focusing on how these
elements can be translated into artistic expressions.
What tools or methods do you commonly use in your work?
I rely on a blend of curiosity, instinct, experimentation, and inspiration, using both conceptual
and physical tools.
Are there specific symbols or imagery that represent your work?
I draw inspiration from the forms and patterns in nature, exploring themes of adaptation and
transformation. I am interested in observing the animal kingdom, the natural world, and the
interactions between humans and their environment.

What kind of avatar would best reflect your professional identity? (e.g., futuristic, abstract,
natural)
A natural-themed avatar, possibly inspired by land art, would best reflect my professional
identity. This would connect with my focus on nature and biological systems. Maybe it can be
one of my sculptures that I sent you. Imagery: 1)metal dragon, 2)mother womb, 3) land art-owl
What colors or styles resonate with your work and should be included in your avatar?
Earthy tones such as greens, browns, and blues resonate with my work, reflecting natural
landscapes and organic forms. A style that incorporates textures and patterns found in nature
would be fitting.
How do you envision the avatar interacting with your audience or representing your work?

I envision the avatar as a dynamic representation of nature's complexity, engaging the audience
through its organic and evolving forms. It should evoke a sense of connection to the natural
world and invite viewers to explore and reflect on their relationship with the environment.
Do you have any particular characteristics or traits you want your avatar to embody?
The avatar should embody characteristics of growth, transformation, knowledge.
What emotions or messages would you like your avatar to convey?
I would like the avatar to convey a message of harmony and balance within the natural world. It
should evoke feelings of wonder, curiosity, highlighting the beauty and complexity of nature.
Are there any specific elements or motifs from your work that should be incorporated into the
avatar?
Incorporating elements such as natural textures, organic shapes, and references to biological
systems. These motifs would reflect the themes of adaptation and interaction with the
environment
Is there anything else you’d like to add or consider for your digital avatar?

If you wish, provide a precise description of how you envision your avatar:
Maybe it can be one of my sculptures that I sent you. Imagery: 1)metal dragon, 2)mother
womb, 3) land art-owl
The avatar should have an interactive element, allowing it to change subtly in response to
viewer interaction. ( I do not know how) ..

Cordy The Mycomancer, Mycémons Series

Artist name Terrabytes Glitch Lab, Ai
Artwork Description:

Created during the "Virtual Queer Enviroment" Pokémon Workshop by Isabela Fernández, "Cordy the Mycomancer" is a Pokémon-like avatar inspired by the Cordyceps fungi known for their parasitic relationship with insects. Cordy is a master of manipulation, able to control and influence other creatures to ensure their survival and propagation.

QUEER ECOLOGY

*Mycology as a Queer Discipline.* "Our scientific understanding of mushrooms and other fungi have been shaped and indeed impeded by mycophobia, a condition of fear and revulsion that we compare here to queerphobia. In this work, we argue that mycology relies upon queer methodologies for knowledge acquisition given both the nonbinary, cryptic, and subversive biological nature of fungi as well as society’s determination that fungi are perverse and unworthy of formal investigation. We further argue that the queer methodologies of mycology that developed in response to these conditions have enhanced rather than hindered our knowledge of fungi." LINK **

SUPERPOWERS

1. Mind Control: Cordy can control the actions of other creatures , similar to how Cordyceps fungi manipulate their insect hosts.

2. Rapid Growth: Cordy can quickly spread their mycelium to take over new enviroments, ensuring their survival and dominance.

3. Spore Release: Cordy can release spores that can infect and control other creatures, spreading their influence far and wide.

4. Regeneration: Cordy was the ability to regenerate from even the smallest piece of mycelium, making them nearly indestructible.

SOUND

Cordy makes a soft, whispering sound when releasing spores, reminiscent of the rustling of leaves in a forest.

ChatGPT's 'Bringing the Heat' lyrics

Artist name Praba Pilar
Artwork Description:

In the song “Bringing the Heat,” ChatGPT wrote lyrics focused on ways that Mark Zuckerberg and Meta Corporation can join the technological pluriverse. ChatGPT offered a clear path for Zuckerberg to make things right in Hawaii, returning the stolen lands to Indigenous people, and shifting the company to a new era assuring global well being. Here are some of the lyrics:

Zuckerberg, it's SARLAR, bringing the heat, Mark Zuckerberg, time for a seat. Meta Corporation, it's a call to embrace, Nixtamalizatech, change up the pace.

Zuckerberg, listen close, it's time to act, Return the stolen lands, make a real impact. Hawaii's calling, Indigenous rights, Time to make it right, ignite the heights.

Stolen lands in paradise, gotta make amends, Zuckerberg, it's time to make some friends. Indigenous people, hear their voice, Give them back the lands, let the world rejoice.

Zuckerberg, lead the way, set the trend, Return the lands, let the wounds mend. Campaign for change, 230 in the past, Ethical tech practices, make it last.

Zuckerberg, Meta, take the lead, In the Nixtamalizatech, plant the seed. A new era, a tech revelation, For global well-being, a standing ovation.

ChatGPT is commenting here on the take over of land in Hawaii by billionaires of the technology sector. Whether to build bunkers, or create their personal paradise, these technology executives are the latest face of techno-colonialism.

Artwork Description:

This all began in 2017 with the NO!!!BOT performance, and continues to this day ~~~
The NO!!!BOT performance begins with a perverse military Exoskeleton that embodies the tentacled necrosis of Tech Cartel leaders, the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (and its funded university labs), and Silicon Valley corporations. These military Exoskeletons technologically enhance any human body’s capacity to control, dominate, and kill other human bodies. The NO!!!BOT is not a ROBOT. It is by shedding the surveillance equipment, emoticon-itude, and aggression of automated violence that the NO!!!BOT manifests.
The NO!!!BOT is the body’s desire to resist the supersonic technological rail driving us deeper into militarized neo-colonial relations. The NO!!!BOT is queer refusal and co-creation.
I began this performance as a work in progress at the Queer Arts Festival in San Francisco, and then toured it around North America. In the last half of the performance, I silently invited audiences to help me co-construct an UnSuicide Vest on my body. From fresh corn husks, corn silk, corn meal, and corn oil, some GMO, some organic, we co-created a temporary utopia, an opening to possibilities of collectivity in the face of extreme isolation and destructive disentanglement. Audiences in San Francisco, Mexico City, Vancouver, Toronto, New York, Saskatoon, and Oakland shared intense energy and emotion, pouring corn oil and cornmeal on me gleefully, peeling husks and layering them on me, gently putting corn silk on my head, or quietly eating the corn raw.

Larval Rock Stars

Artist name Praba Pilar
Artwork Description:

Larval Rock Stars is an ongoing multi-modal project (website, writing, performance/sound/video experiments, couplings, twinning, etc) of the distributed intelligence of the orbifold twins who hold the larvae between them - Pilarva (Praba Pilar) and Larvaidya (Anuj Vaidya), also known as Pilarvaidya. We intersect the bio-techno-critical and the absurd as the segmented paramythology of larvae of the post-human future. “Behold the larva we hold between us – the formless, shapeless, and unknowable potential for new life on earth.” Born of prophesy, and precipitated by the hubris of man, LRS brings tidings of a new future – a post-human future, and offers movement from necrotic egocentrism to biotic ecocentrism.

Paradise now_

Artist name Ivana Tkalčić
Artwork Description:

The term hyper-reality marks a new concurrence of circumstances in which disappears every tension between reality and illusion, between reality as it is and as it could be. Time and space, drastically compressed by the computer, have become interchangeable. Time is compressed in that once everything has been reduced to ‘bits’ of information, it becomes simultaneously accessible. Space is compressed in that once everything has been reduced to ‘bits’ of information, it can be conveyed from A to B with the speed of light. As a result of digitization, everything is in the here and now. The information on whole world is on internet and salvation is just a WIFI away.

Do we look at the world with the same eyes as our ancestors? How has the way we see reality changed due to technology, media and screens? How is our relationship with technology? Do we live through technology? Did we find the long-awaited utopia in virtual reality or does the virtual reality amplify society’s hysteria and schizophrenia, lowering focus and awareness?
The notion of “the real” continues to be hotly debated in an era when the internet, virtual reality, cyber theory, and bioethics challenge the very nature of “reality”.

TWILIGHT ZONE SNAPCHAT

Artist name Ivana Tkalčić
Artwork Description:

This project was realized as part of the Summer Sessions Talent Development Network and is a coproduction of Metamedia Association and V2_Institute for unstable media.

Today in the ever-changing world of quick shifting realities, the comprehension of what we think we know about the world is changing rapidly. In the past ten years the development of technology speed up exponentially. Did this change been for easier and better for living? Or is technology changing and reshaping our consciousness and ways of thinking which cannot yet be imagined?

Our perception and an experience of the world undoubtedly changed. Just look at our daily online communication. Nowadays it’s not only happening through text but also through images, videos, GIFs, twitter posts, blogs, games, Skype and group chats. Even if we’re far away from our friends and relatives we can still connect instantly and vividly as almost being physically present. But all that information is leaving a digital footprint that can be followed to the source and potentially misused.

We are transiting into a post-information and post-human age that is radical transformation our way and nature of living, being and understanding the world that surrounds us. Furthermore, on a personal scale, the boundary between online and offline life has disappeared. The most intimate part of our lives have become slice of virtual world that draws the strength from the media. How has the everyday online – offline interaction changed the experience of the world around us and influenced our daily visual perception?

Artwork Description:

How do you imagine your avatar?
What is your avatar's tag/name?
terranaut
What is your primary field of work or research (e.g., art, science, technology)?
I work at the intersection of art, science, and technology.
Can you briefly describe your main artistic or scientific focus?
So far my main focus has been on space exploration and its ethical implications, the relationship
between digital and physical realities, sustainability and environmental consciousness, and
human perception in a hyperconnected era.
What are the core values or themes that drive your work?
Interdisciplinarity, collaboration, experimentation, playfulness
How would you describe your creative or research process?
In approaching the artistic practice, I don't see the media as some fixed and insurmountable
element. In the process of creation, I see the medium as a fluid and changeable tool with which
can different ideas and concepts be realized. Some ideas feel more comfortable as a short film,
some as photographs, and some as an installation.
The whole process of artistic practice takes place in a similar state (of mind) as in playing.
Playing is a good method for going deeper into the practice. The playing is learning how
something works, how it behaves, how it cooperates, sets, and solves problems. The playing
encourages us to experiment, to discover new alternative ways of perceiving. The playing opens
up the space for unexpected moments.

What tools or methods do you commonly use in your work?
Experimenting with objects, data, and storytelling to reveal new interpretations through
different media.

Are there specific symbols or imagery that represent your work?
Playfulness
What kind of avatar would best reflect your professional identity? (e.g., futuristic, abstract,
natural)
Abstract.
What colors or styles resonate with your work and should be included in your avatar?

How do you envision the avatar interacting with your audience or representing your work?
Riddles, question-asking
Do you have any particular characteristics or traits you want your avatar to embody?

What emotions or messages would you like your avatar to convey?
Fully automated human reproduction factories for assembly line baby evil CEO

Are there any specific elements or motifs from your work that should be incorporated into the

Fully automated human reproduction factories for assembly line baby evil CEO

Is there anything else you’d like to add or consider for your digital avatar?

Emulating ways that humans or future humans might reproduce, copulate, become virulent or have sex. From self fertilizing to budding to sporulation to laying eggs, nature has a lot to show us about reproductive strategies and the style of life cycles already shown through biodiversity.

If you wish, provide a precise description of how you envision your avatar:

We are focused on the artificial implantation of germline gene-edited interspecies transgenic human chimeras. These are so-called Designer Babies or Genetically Modified Children. So the subtext to our questioning is research on the interpretation of human chimeras from the perspective of Animal Studies, emphasizing concepts of animal enrichment and ‘the animal turn’. It is supposed that some human modifications would be born with genes from other species and would therefore be partially outside of the definition of human.

Wolf in Sheeps Clothing

Artist name Callum J Siegmund,
Artwork Description:

The protein sculpture has come from explorations into Deextinction, a process where humans attempt to graft genetic fragments of lost species into currently alive ones, acting as host for ghosts of past, fragmented chimeras.

The sequence for sheep wool (Keratin) was taken and in the centre was spliced a fragment from the Tasmanian Wolfs RUNT to produce a stable chimeric protein. The title mocks the current state of Deextinction, which is portrays itself as good faith industry but has concerning capitalist agendas such as the produciton of chimeric animals and dextinction biotechnology for patenting and profiteering. Further, the sheep has been an animal which has been used to harbour another Deextinct animal capitalist wherein famously a 'mammoth meatball' was made using small fragments of mammoth DNA in sheep muscle cells claiming it to be lab grown meat made from Mammoth.

BALANCE IS FOR GODS

Artist name Terrabytes Glitch Lab, Remixed from Sketchfab
Artwork Description:

The first humans were created by the gods to serve them and keep the world in balance.
The first humans were perfect in every way, but they were also naïve and easily led astray.
The gods grew tired of their shenanigans and decided to destroy them.
The second humans were created from the blood of the first humans.
They were stronger and wiser, but still prone to error.
The gods gave them free will, but also tasked them with the responsibility of keeping the world in
balance.
The third humans were created from the clay of the earth.
They were the first humans to be truly mortal.
The gods gave them intelligence and the ability to reason, but they were also flawed and susceptible
to temptation.
The fourth humans were created from the fire of the sun.
They were the first humans to be born with the capacity for evil.
The gods gave them free will, but also tasked them with the responsibility of keeping the world in
balance.
The fifth humans were created from the water of the sea.
They were the first humans to be born with the capacity for good.
The gods gave them free will, but also tasked them with the responsibility of keeping the world in
balance.
The sixth humans were created from the wind.
They were the first humans to be born with the capacity for both good and evil.
The gods gave them free will, but also tasked them with the responsibility of keeping the world in
balance.
The seventh humans were created from the sperm of the first humans.
They were the first humans to be born with the capacity for love.
The gods gave them free will, but also tasked them with the responsibility of keeping the world in
balance.
The eighth humans were created from the egg of the first humans.
They were the first humans to be born with the capacity for life.
The gods gave them free will, but also tasked them with the responsibility of keeping the world in
balance.
The ninth humans were created from the dust of the earth.
They were the first humans to be born with the capacity for death.
The gods gave them free will, but also tasked them with the responsibility of keeping the world in
balance.
The tenth humans were created from the breath of the first humans.
They were the first humans to be born with the capacity for both life and death.

balance.

MICROBIOME HAUSFRAUENART

Artist name Xristina Sarli
Artwork Description:

AMANITA quotes Merlin Sheldrake from Entangled Life: How Fungi Make Our Worlds,

Change Our Minds, And Shape Our Futures

The biological identity of most organisms can’t be pried apart from the life

of their microbial symbiotes. The word 'ecology’ has its roots in the Greek word oikos, meaning 'house’,'household’, or 'dwelling place’. Our bodies, like those of all other organisms, are dwelling places.

Life is nested biomes all the way down.

We can’t be defined on anatomical grounds because our bodies are shared with microbes,

and consist of more microbial cells than our own - cows can’t eat grass,

for example, but their microbial populations can, and cows’ bodies have evolved

to house the microbes that sustain them.

Neither can we be defined developmentally, as the organism that proceeds from the fertilization

of an animal egg, because we depend, like all mammals, on our symbiotic partners

to direct parts of our development programs.

Nor is it possible to define us genetically, as bodies made up of cells that share an identical genome

—many symbiotic microbial partners are inherited from our mothers alongside our own DNA,

and at points in our evolution art history, microbial associates have permanently

insinuated themselves into the cells of their hosts: our mitochondria have their own genome,

as do plants’ chloroplasts, and at least 8 per cent of the human genome originated in viruses

(we can even swap cells with other humans when we grow into 'chimeras’,

formed when mothers and fetuses exchange cells or genetic material in utero).

Nor can our immune systems be taken as a measure of individuality,

although our immune cells are often thought of as answering this question for us

 by distinguishing self from 'non-self’.

Immune systems are as concerned with managing our relationships with our resident microbes

as fighting off external attackers, and appear to have evolved to enable colonization

by microbes rather than prevent it.

The Brain Coral is a species of large coral which is a colony of microorganisms that filter carbon dioxide from the water around it, and them use the carbon to build the colony itself, and expelling the oxygen in the form of large bubbles thst it periodicslly releases out in threes. These bubbles are sble to replenish your oxygen, as your oxygen tanks are equipped to use air from the water to refill. Thwy can often be found in large forests of kelp or reefs of The Crater of 4546B.

LE DOME

Artist name Downloaded from Sketchfab
Artwork Description:

A Mercator map of the starry heavens drawn by William Croswell,1810. The 19th century western constellations are projected on the earth for navigation references. By building your city under the projected trajectory of a star at a specific time. Now you can navigate, from land to sea, and from city to city. By checking the map you can still see that some cities have been founded with this principle in mind. This was the antiquity GPS system. far more reliable than the modern one. This is why the medieval astrological projections are inverted. Because it is not to document the sky, but to document the “where about” on earth. By also knowing the cyclic derivation of a selected star (around 15 meters par year), you can also deduce the date of the city foundation as long as you have the correct data.

Flamboyant Frequencies

Artist name Kristin Lucas
Artwork Description:

The digital hybird human-flamingo in Flamboyant Frequencies serves as a bridge to explore both the popularity of flamingos in visual culture and the widespread adoption of television in 1950s America, both symbols of postwar domestic life. This reflection includes the iconic plastic flamingo lawn ornaments—a phenomenon sparked by the rise of the plastic industry, also in the 1950s. As counterculture movements of the 1960s spurned the plastic industry, artists like Nam June Paik, with collaborator and video engineer Shuya Abe, challenged global mass media’s monopoly over television. They hacked into TV monitors and engineered the Wobbulator, a device that distorted broadcast signals and pre-recorded video in real-time, transforming television from a passive, one-way medium into a platform for artistic expression and public participation.

In Flamboyant Frequencies, created during a Signal Culture residency, the digital flamingo takes center stage on a Wobbulator’s CRT screen, performing mesmerizing courtship displays. Just as Earth's magnetic fields guide migratory birds, the Wobbulator’s yokes manipulate magnetic fields to steer electron beams across the screen.

As the music in the video intensifies, the Wobbulator reacts to the amplified audio signals by distorting and exaggerating the flamingo’s showy moves, turning its screen habitat into a disco dance hall. At times, the flamingo multiplies in a stroboscopic fashion, echoing the synchronized movements of a flock. The pulsating rhythms challenge the viewer’s ability to comfortably consume the image of the flamingo, yet the bird skillfully maintains its balance through these disruptions.

The video also serves as a meditation on how media technologies, like broadcast television—though derived from Earth’s materials—have disrupted habitats and introduced new challenges to species. Through the wobbulator’s effects, the video offers a prismatic reflection on the complex layers and interconnections between biological and technological systems, centering on the flamingo—a beloved and resilient bird increasingly intertwined with today’s lithium battery industry. Oscillating between lightheartedness and deeper themes, the flamingo in Flamboyant Frequencies emerges as an unflappable figure, navigating shifting ground and embodying adaptability and perseverance in an ever-changing environment.

Flamboyant Frequencies was performed live by Lucas and recorded during a Signal Culture Residency in June 2024, using a Wobbulator interfacing with control voltage audio synthesis, while simultaneously being rescanned by a camera and tinted flamingo-pink with a Jones Colorizer/Keyer.

Fifty-five years after Paik and Abe's pioneering work, the Wobbulator remains revered by generations of artists, researchers, and toolmakers. Its design continues to inspire rebuilding efforts using parts from both functional and defunct CRT monitors, extending the Wobbulator’s lifespan as a vital tool for exploring television’s material reality, questioning the status quo, and engaging in experimental storytelling.

Fomes Fomentarius

Artist name Xristina Sarli, Photogrammetry Scans "Traces of time 001" (https://skfb.ly/oXXZU and "Polypore Fungus" (https://skfb.ly/oGoJS)
Artwork Description:

Fomes Fomentarius

The tinder fungus, is a white-rot fungus that is widespread in the northern hemisphere of the earth and equally domestic to Europe, Asia, and North America. It is famous for being a medicinal fungus in Traditional Chinese Medicine and Traditional European Medicine and its fruiting bodies were harvested for the production of textiles and wound pads in Germany till the eighteenth century. Hyphae of F. fomentarius grow well under laboratory conditions on different by-products from agriculture and forestry including hemp, raps straw and aspen sawdust, and can be used to produce fungal-based composite materials as most recently reported [18]. Hereby, F. fomentarius becomes cultivated on solid lignocellulosic substrates (such as straw or wood chips) that have been packed into a mold shape. In contrast to molding-based techniques, additive manufacturing (AM), known as 3D printing, does not rely on a specific mold, and therefore allows the fabrication of complex parts with unusual geometry. This is highly advantageous when object design and geometry frequently change, as in the case for furniture, niche product packaging, and architecture. For instance, Bhardwaj et al. [19] reported AM of a two-step colonized biomass-waste-fungal composite material that could be considered for packaging and building applications. Blast Studio has been working on a similar approach using take-away waste biomass and fungi for manufacturing unique art and furniture pieces in limited editions with AM [20]. Goidea et al. [21] built composite materials for architecture from living fungi, plant biomass, and clay and Krayer et al. [6] mixed mycelium with a vegetative substrate and printed it into the desired form to be used as a sound absorber. NASA's Ames Research Center’s myco-architecture project or the Growing Fungal Structures in Space project of ESA considers fungal-based materials in combination with AM even for Moon and Mars exploration for future habitats [22, 23]. Although AM of fungal-based materials shows a huge potential for many applications from an environmental perspective, very limited research has been conducted into this topic so far. Furthermore, the addition of solid substrates, like sawdust, which is typically used for AM in fungal-based materials, and the fibrous mycelium itself, makes the adaptation of AM challenging, especially in printing high-precision parts [24].
