Between One Shore and Several Others series: ‘Between One Shore And Several Others’ is an inquiry into the transmigrations of concepts, their assimilation, internalization, and the evolution of identities. Identity is an ongoing process embedded in everyday social practices. Ideas that shape one’s identity are usually local – local places, local customs, local histories – but the infusion of ideas and the availability of alternatives allows one to escape the circumstances of one’s origin. The osmotic nature of this interplay permits a translation that does not seek to reclaim the context but to adapt and expand the vocabulary of the concept.

…and for those who sing their national anthem in somebody else’s mother tongue (Death of Socrates after Jacques Louis David)

Artist name Vivek Vilasini
Artwork Description:

Translation plays a piotal role in determining how one establishes or negotiates one’s identity whether it is through opposition, assimilation or naturalisation. It is a form or cultural immigration, and where the immigrant idea is strong, it becomes pervasive and finally gains mainstream acceptance.During the late 18th century, France was experiencing the Enlightenment, which emphasized reason and individual rights. At the same time, the country was also facing political instability, which would eventually lead to the French Revolution in 1789. Against this backdrop, David's painting of Socratesrepresented a hero who stood up for truth and justice in the face of oppressive authorities. David's portrayal of Socrates as a martyr for the cause of truth and justice resonated with the revolutionary ideals of the time. The painting symbolized the struggle of the individual against the state, and it became a rallying cry for those who sought to overthrow oppressive governments and establish more democratic societies. In contemporary times, "The Death of Socrates" continues to hold political connotations and meanings. The painting has been interpreted as a commentary on the tension between individual rights and state power, and it has been used as a symbol of resistance against authoritarian regimes. Additionally, the painting has been viewed as a reminder of the importance of intellectual freedom and the pursuit of knowledge, particularly in the face of censorship and repression. Overall, "The Death of Socrates" remains a powerful and influential work of art that continues to inspire political and philosophical discussions to this day.

Last supper Gaza (2008)

Artist name Vivek Vilasini
Artwork Description:

"Last supper Gaza (2008), is one of my favourite works. I was able to bring together lot of issues that are constantly buzzing around in my head - Identity, Culture, history, politics, gender, city, conflict, survival, faith, betrayal, translations and aesthetics. The ‘Last Supper’ by Leonardo Da Vinci is about faith and betrayal. Through it, it was possible to gaze at the inner zones of those caught in the crossfire, between peoples who are trying to find contemporary solutions and those seeking out mythical justifications."

Gauri Dancers Perhaps Waswo X Waswo’s most serious body of work, this series consists of outdoor studio portraits of Gauri Dancers from the Bhil Tribe between 2010 and 2018. The portraits focus, not on the dance, but on the young and old men from village farming communities that transform themselves into gods and goddesses, heroes and heroines during this little-known festival season. Waswo perceives a awkwardness and also a comfortability (even an eagerness) among the men to cross and explore the gender binary.
