Statement:

Welcome to the Museum of Computational Image Artefacts (MoCIA), a research project exploring the boundaries between the physical experience of artefacts behind glass and the use of computational imaging on screens. The MoCIA examines how digital images influence the understanding and expansion of museums into digital spaces, showcasing how museums are adopting and integrating these new imaging technologies into their exhibits, programming, and online platforms.

Experience of the site aims to provide insights into the historical and current roles of institutional museums, particularly those in Western cities with legacies of imperialism and colonialism. These well-funded national institutions often emphasise the universality of their collections, yet they restrict the actions, languages, and types of knowledge permitted within their walls.

The project explores the types of knowledge claims made by museums and the extent to which post-photographic images support them. The work aims to unpack how new forms of scholarship, intended to shed light on institutional collections, are presented to visitors.

3D Environment Description:

The exhibition space is a computational rendition of the British Museum, created using LiDAR scans of the site in London. The artifacts contained within this space utilize various forms of technology and represent items recorded in the museum's collection. These include large-scale sculptures of Sir Hans Sloane, which are placed in juxtaposition with objects from popular culture, specifically from the Pokémon franchise. The space is in a state of ruin, conveying a post-apocalyptic atmosphere. This is emphasized by gaps in the ceiling and walls. The overall ambiance of the space is foggy and dismal

While physically close to each other, they appear emotionally distant, completely absorbed in the virtual world on their screens. Despite being in such iconic and historically rich locations, their expressions are uniformly somber and disengaged from their surroundings, highlighting a contrast between the vibrancy of the museums and their own internal disconnection. Curator's comments:

Image created in Midjourney with this text - to -image prompt created by Chat GPT-4 "Create an image set in the British Museum, where a diverse group of people is closely gathered together, each deeply focused on using their mobile phones to 3D scan various ethnographic objects. These individuals, representing a range of descents including Caucasian, Hispanic, Black, and South Asian, and of different genders, are intently scanning objects with a history of being looted from indigenous people during the era of Enlightenment and colonialism. They seem completely absorbed in their task, oblivious to the other museum visitors around them. The museum environment is rich with historical artefacts and exhibits, providing a striking contrast to the modern technology used by the visitors. The lighting captures the ambiance of a museum, with focused illumination on the artefacts, creating a spotlight effect, while the surrounding area remains dimly lit. The composition should highlight the juxtaposition between the deep cultural history embedded in the museum's artefacts and the contemporary scene of visitors engrossed in their digital devices. The image should be rendered in high photographic fidelity, emphasising the sharp details of both the historical artefacts and the modern scanning activity"

The Trentham Laver, 200 AD + 19th Century, 2023

Artist name Peter Ainsworth
Artwork Description:

Object Type
Photogrammetric 3D scan

Museum number
1756,0101.673

Description

Photogrammetric 3D scan of Marble head from a statue, probably of Julius Caesar. 50 BCE

Curator's comments:

The scan was completed as part of research into the ways 3D images are often fractured during their reconstruction in digital forms, particularly considering mobile devices and museums as an assemblage of disparate parts. The British Museum catalogue reads: "Marble basin consisting of a fluted bowl supported on two griffin's legs and central column springing from a floral ball. Below is an oval platform decorated with scale pattern supported by six blocks carved with grotesque heads. The blocks rest on a rectangular plinth decorated with scroll ornament. The bowl is of dubious antiquity. The legs are antique table or chair supports. The central floral column is certainly ancient (the support under it is new). The oval table is not genuine; the supporting heads are partly ancient having originally served as acroteria on the lid of a sarcophagus but the plinths with basket decoration are 18th century. The rectangular plinth slab has ornament carved in the early 3rd century AD but it has been altered to adapt it to its present use."

The scan was created using the mobile app Scaniverse.
