Remembrance is a sacred land of nostalgia and cherished memories. The tree thrives in its natural, untainted state, and mesmerizes the voyagers with works by Sawdah Asim, Cher Feng, WooYeon Kim, Jane Tao, and Summer Tribble.
Our childhood, memories, and pains have affected each individual’s current lives, which made it difficult for them to live freely. This project shows the possibility of being free from such wounds. When the character “faces" the moment he was injured before, he can make his load “light.” The hopeful “light” can free him and allow him to “face” a wider positive direction for the future. This animation explores the type of grief that is more insidious than apparent, yet it will disrupt the trajectory of an individual’s life. In an attempt to understand the peculiarity of impermanence, the aftermath of loss is simulated in the familiar form of a low-polygon, roleplaying video game. Dependent on dialogue, kinesics, and quests, it becomes noticeable that grief disrupts the ease of these interactions. The storyline progression of this simulation is heavily determined by frequent menu prompts that suggest there is free will in its presented choices, but it is illusory as the choice has already been predetermined by an outer force rather than the viewer. Instead, the viewer resorts to experiencing the outcome of the storyline with no guarantee in predictability and full awareness of grief’s permeating embrace on all facets of life (and simulated life).
By combining poetry, 3D scanning, modeling, and animation, I build virtual environments out of my emotions- storytelling not just through words, but also through the ambiguity of rendered textures, scanned objects, and many more moving parts. I created this piece to process my personal experiences with mourning and memory.
Grief is a strange feeling. Some days it takes over you slowly like a heavy wave, and other days it uncomfortably jolts your body awake. This is a piece about losing my best friend Christina, and all of the vacancy that followed her absence. Inspired by BTS (방탄소년단) '봄날 (Spring Day)' music video. Song: "Stay With Me" - Christina Grimmie & Diamond Eyes (Alternate Cut)
Interoceptive Awareness is a three channel animation series that follows a digital body on a spiritual journey to find her lost sensory self as she grapples with the evanescent nature of physical and sensory awareness. A pink translucent entity created through visualizing sensations dances with a digital replica of my physical form. Never fully aligned nor apart, both bodies are offset to a motion capture performance, continually searching, repelling, and embracing.
