Statement:

The Bachelor of Fine Arts Graduating Senior Class invites you to celebrate art in technology in our unprecedented Fall 2022 BFA Exhibition, Resonance! Classes may be in person once again, but many of these graduating students have experienced the struggles of a hybrid experience for their courses; so in the spirit of continuing the hybrid experience, the DMA BFA Exhibition is opening a physical gallery with both physical and virtual pieces for you to explore.

Resonance reflects on the experience of the artist during polarizing times. In a world permeated by issues surrounding identity, representation, mental health, and embracing cultures of all eras, it can feel overwhelming at times. With these issues in mind, the artists create works tackling such topics through reflecting on aspects of the past, present, and future. Through experiencing the art of Resonance, one can reach a greater understanding and gain new perspectives on these topics through exploring these works.

Folklore

Artist name Avery Gutierrez
Artwork Description:

"Folklore" is an interactive piece that allows you to explore Filipino and Mexican folklore through the experience of an oracle card reading in a virtual environment. Inspired by my own practice of tarot/oracle and my Filipino and Mexican culture, I wanted to create a personal divination tool that others with the same background felt connected to.

1st card - la llorna
2nd card - la mala hora

Projective Sleep Space

Artist name Kevin Truong
Artwork Description:

This work is an exploration of recording dreams and nightmares that stood out in a group of friends. The aesthetic of the piece is a callback to recording on an old device such as a VHS tape. The visuals are renderings of prominent figures in our dreams/nightmares as they create a strong emotion when remembered. Some figures invoke positive emotion while others remind us of the dread experienced that night. The composition will range as each image is based on a different memory. The distortions are used to invoke the feeling of looking into another person’s memory where some pieces are missing and are filled in with fuzzy noise.

Nature's Transmutation

Artist name Vanessa Rivera
Artwork Description:

A world enticed and lured into the seductive qualities of the digital and the organic. The immersive qualities and the tempting visuals of a digital realm challenges my question on why the male energy is not commonly associated with nature in comparison to the feminine. Does the masculine dominate nature? Why does the femininity of nature not commonly coexist with human masculinity?

pagkatawo

Artist name Marc Cordonero
Artwork Description:

For hundreds of years, Filipinos have been stripped of their culture and true Identity. The Filipino ancestors have been enslaved, raped, beaten, killed, mocked, and ridiculed by colonizers to the point of forgetting our past. But one thing remains the Pinoy pride. For many years, Filipinos have researched, searched, and traveled to recollect our old tradition. “pagkatawo” roughly translates to birth/ identity in Bisayan, a Filipino dialect. This artwork pays homage to the early culture of tattooing, music, and storytelling. The story that is being shared is about the God, Batala, creating the 7 moons and the dragon, Bakunawa, coming to eat them all.

Solitude

Artist name Noura Idris
Artwork Description:

Solitude is to raise awareness that our emotions are all over the place, and that’s okay. It is a reminder for those emotionally exhausted by the physical & virtual stresses in life. It is to seclude ourselves with our emotions and simply feel - without any judgment or influence from the outside world.

Solitude is born at a very critical and trying time in my life. I am faced with the blessings and challenges of starting a new job, planning my wedding, and preparing myself for graduation all at the same time. My struggle to balance all of these things has led me to question the way I operate my life, and mainly how I handle stress. As I focused on this issue, I realized that the environment we live in today is plagued with stressful and toxic elements.

We are continuously exposed to a dangerous amount of digital information that harbors unstable and irrational emotions. The moment we access social media, we are bombarded by posts that are heartwarming, sad, funny, aggravating, inspiring, and interesting. When we turn on the TV or read the news, the media is constantly reporting stories that scare, anger, or upset us. Our minds are incapable of processing all of these various feelings and emotions in such a short amount of time, resulting in a society that is extremely depressed and confused.

In addition to electronic pressures, there are societal pressures. We always seem to coerce ourselves and others to mirror how society expects us to feel. This becomes easily evident when someone is overly happy and excited, but is told to “calm down”. In contrast, when someone is sad, they are told to “cheer up”, and that “other people have it worse”. We are constantly told how to feel, instead of being told that our feelings are heard and understood.

I will be the first to admit I have a hard time filtering through my emotions. The endless ups and downs are exhausting. So, I created Solitude for myself and others who relate to my feelings of emotional confusion. Solitude is to raise awareness that our emotions are all over the place and that’s okay. In order to regain control of our emotions, we need to be able to fully process them. To be freely sad when we are hurt and annoyingly happy when we are feeling joyful. To seclude ourselves with our emotions and simply feel - without any judgment or influence from the outside world. That is Solitude.

Marija

Artist name Alyssa Castaneda
Artwork Description:

Marija is an RPG game, where you play as a young girl who gives birth to a monstrous stillborn at your friend, Lorelei’s sleepover. Ashamed, and scared, with the help of your friends' stuffed animals, your goal is to discard it before anyone discovers what's happened. The game is alluding to the Chrisitan themes, as well as others like adolescence, puberty, sex, family violence, and substance abuse. The game is largely based on my own preadolescents, and the relationship I had with God, my friends, my family, and especially my body.

Daydream

Artist name Lynn Nguyen
Artwork Description:

“Daydream” is not about a narrative, but about a journey. It is a state of mind in which one's attention is focused on something other than the present. It's often associated with relaxation, but it can also be a place of escape or even a way to deal with overwhelming emotions. In this emulation of daydreams with nature, the viewers can immerse themselves in a world that blurs out the boundary between fantasy and reality in a way that makes them feel calm and peaceful.
