如夢似幻- dreamlike (adjective): immeasurable beauty, the likes of which appear mythical, but exist.
Dreamlike displays the beauty of Chinese tradition from the vast stories of mythological creatures and what they represent to the elegant clothing from the Han to Song Dynasty.
Thank you to MochiHanfu (on TikTok and Instagram) for collaborating with me on this project.
MochiHanfu is seen wearing 絲綢 (silk clothes) representative of clothing from the 唐朝 (Tang Dynasty) when the 絲綢之路 (Silk Road) to Western regions was open. Because the Silk Road was near the desert, the people around the Silk Road often wore silk due to the cooling nature of the fabric.
The 龍 (Dragon) is the highest being in Chinese mythology. They are often associated with the emperor and are said to be able to control rain and floods. They symbolize both strength and good luck as only those that have accomplished the most admirable achievements are compared to the dragon.
The gallery room includes elements of traditional Chinese architecture with a modern style in order to immerse the viewer in the scene. 月亮門, or Moon Gates, are used to isolate each model for easy viewing.
The 狐狸精 (Nine-Tailed Fox) is a shape-shifting spirit, often portrayed as a beautiful woman in order to seduce men for her own mischief or to consume their bodies. They are cunning and alluring in their own right.
The 白蛇 (White Snake) originates from "Legend of the White Snake", a thrilling story of love and perseverance. In a condensed version, the story begins with a boy named 許仙 (Xu Xian) who accidentally eats tangyuan disguised as immortality pills. After wondering why he hasn't had an appetite in three days, he goes back to the vendor who then hangs him upside down over a bridge where Xu Xian vomits the tangyuan. They are then eaten by a white snake spirit named 白素貞 (Bai Suzhen) who is granted 500 years of powers and is now able to transform into a human. She feels indebted to Xu Xian and with her human form, she and Xu Xian eventually fall in love and get married. The tortoise spirit, 法海 (Fahai) witnesses Bai Suzhen eat the magical tangyuan and becomes extremely jealous, vowing to intervene between Bai Suzhen and Xu Xian.
The 鳳凰, pronounced Fenghuang, a subgrouping of the phoenix, is a female bird often representing celestial beings and is said to only appear in locations blessed with peace and prosperity. They are often paired with the dragon as both represent higher beings and power.
The 麒麟 (Qilin) is a creature with a dragon head, horse body, and ox tail. They are said to appear alongside the passing or arrival of a sage and can often be seen outside palaces as guardians.
MochiHanfu is wearing clothing from the mid 大明 (Ming) dynasty. Her top is an 直領襖裙 (ZhiLing AoQun) and her skirt is called 馬面裙 (MaMian). She is holding a traditional lantern.
MochiHanfu is wearing a 唐朝 (Tang Dynasty) style 齊胸襦裙 (Qixiong RuQun). On her head, she is wearing a 帷帽 (Wei Mao), a conical hat typically woven with bamboo dressed with a thin cloth.
MochiHanfu is wearing a 直領長衫 (straight-collared ChangShan) with a 比甲 (vest) from the 大明 (Ming) Dynasty. She is seen holding a 宮廷扇 (imperial fan), a fan made from silk often held by higher-status individuals.
MochiHanfu is wearing a 腰襕襦裙 (YaoLan RuQun) from the 六朝 (Six Dynasties) period. The sleeves are very wide making the outfit extremely comfortable.
